Not using cashpoints or online banking- normal?

I just want to get some idea of how usual this is.

Dm will not use cash machines or sign up to online banking because she thinks she will be a victim of bank fraud. I think this is rather paranoid as long as sensible precautions are taken with passwords, checking there isn't anything around the cash machine slot etc. Ironically Dm ridicules another relative who won't buy anything online because she might get "robbed".

Dm is only 63, and it concerns me how she seems old before her time in some ways. She refused to use chip and pin for ages and insists her bank issue her a card that is not contactless.

My 20 year old DD won't have a contactless card.

I was in a local shop when a young Woman came in to ask them to keep the CCTV. Her Dad had dropped his card in that shop and by the time they found it missing, £230 had gone.

People think I'm strange because I won't have a microwave. It's because I don't need one.

Likewise, we don't need on-line banking etc. It's a choice whether you get it.

Why do you get to dictate to her? Do you allow her to decide how you are going to live and what you must accept.

It's ok not to use online banking, cashpoints, etc. but one day one will discover how the use of cash suddenly dwindles, signs are being put up in stores "we don't take cash", the bank and post offices close down, etc. Letterboxes are removed. Petrol stations become "card only", etc. At that point, it's important that one is up to date with whatever technologies are current. I'm in a country where you seldom see cash (bills and coins) and where there are no more post offices (you buy your stamps and post your parcels at the equivalent to Tesco). When the post offices were closed down, many elderly found themselves in a difficult situation re paying bills, as they didn't know or dared not to do online banking / use credit cards / swipe / Paypal etc.

I don't mind using online banking but not the app (for starters not enough space on my phone)
I don't have contactless for 2 reasons.
1 it takes up to 3 days to show pending in my account and

  1. I need my receipts and they don't get given with contactless.

I rarely use contactless cards. Only because I struggle to keep on top of what I'm spending, and tapping a card is so easy. If I withdraw cash, when it's gone, it's gone.

63 is young enough not to be moving with the times but l'm surprised that people are complaining that 80 year olds are not up to date with modern technology. Its a huge ask expecting them to learn new stuff at their age. Change is happening so rapidly that younger people adapt very quickly but older people had it one way for so long its difficult to change. I would like to see what we will be like at 80.

I had a large check (tax rebate) to deposit, long queue in bank. Bank staff person persuaded me to use one, showed me how to use it (supposedly) it disappeared! Supposedly! Except it was cashed - but the amount never appeared in my account.

Last time I used one (must be over 3, 4 years ago) there was no envelope. It printed a photograph of the cheque on the receipt.

Horses for courses, but I prefer as much online as possible, so I can do things when it's convenient for me, rather than the few hours banks consider it convenient for them. Last time I got ing cheque, I had 3 wasted journeys (because banks still don't have an app/website that tells you if a cashpoint is working or not) as the out of hours machine was "working", but couldn't take deposits.

DWs beautician used to be cash/cheque only, Until the bank lost a cheque after paying in and refused to honour it (despite the paying in slip being stamped). When we heard the tale of woe, we suggested a bank transfer. Beautician hadn't done that before, but was open, so gave us their bank details. Now she insists on bank transfer only. No need to go to the bank, and money is in her account within two hours.

The only thing about cheques, is you can write one only knowing the recipients name. We're edging closer with Paypal and email addresses though ...

My Grandad does this too. My favourite part is that he expects us to order online for him as he doesn't want to get robbed Grin

My friend is only 40 and has always been like this. She won’t even set up a direct debit to pay her bills! She won’t do eBay or Amazon. Buys nothing online.

It's hard to escape the feeling they are subsidising online shoppers ...

I find It's psychologically easier to buy online or with a card.

I may pay more for a transaction in a real shop than I would on Amazon but I stop myself buying impulsively.

Plus I have the warm glow of paying more into local full-fat tax paying business rather than supporting Amazon sending the profits to Jeff Bezos.

I'm in my 70s, am quite happy to use cash machines and online shopping. I don't get why people won't use cash and think it's ridiculous when I see someone buy a small item, eg a newspaper using a card. I don't use online banking, I know what goes in and out of my account and get a monthly statement.

My mum is 54 and won't get online banking. If she is sending me money for whatever reason she either goes in to the bank or she gives my brother cash (he still lives at home) and he sends it to me.

It's really annoying but she won't be told!

My FIL has never in his life used a cash point (he's 63) and will not bank online. He is horrified also that MIL has a Facebook account and is convinced that their identities will be stolen.

My mother refuses to bank online (she's only 55!) She does use a cashpoint though.
