I hate what I look like

So basically. I hate everything about my appearance.

I want to lose weight, I'm currently about a 12 at 5'4.

I hate my clothes. I want to be more stylish.

My make up always looks shit.

My hair is rubbish and always feels as though it needs washed and doesn't really look styled.

I just feel shit about myself.

Where do I start? 😩😩😩😩

I have just done the Couch to 5K plan and it was life changing for me. I have lost a little bit of weight but in general it has just toned me up more but more importantly made me feel so much happier and more confident. I am still trying to lose weight to fit into clothes I used to wear but I do not feel like you do. These are other things I do - i put fake tan on twice a week. I use flash bronzer for the face by Lancôme. It is expensive but I just use it on my face and neck and it gives a lovely colour whilst not making your face look too different to your body. I honestly think a light tan makes you look slimmer and prettier. Definitely go for a good haircut and get some highlights or lowlights - I treat myself using Groupon or similar which saves loads of money but allows you to go to a decent salon. Then book yourself into an expensive make up concession at a department store for a makeover. It is free and they will teach you how to apply make up to suit you. You may want to buy the products after that but if they are too pricey make a note of them and then do google research for cheaper recommended alternatives. Re your clothes, again book a personal shopper at a department store and get them to help you find out what suits you. You are under no obligation to buy anything. I have done all these things and they have all helped me. Just spend a day focussed on yourself. Go and get your nails done too. Pamper yourself. It just seems like you need a little advice and a confidence boost. Best of luck!

Thank you everyone. I'm going to look up the couch to 5k thing. It's so hard fitting this around a one year old but I'm definitely going to try and dedicate some time to myself.

I'd feel really pressured to buy loads from a personal shopper! Are their services expensive?

And sorry. I didn't mean to offend. I'm not saying people this size are big, I'm just not happy with ME right now

It's horrible feeling uncomfortable in your own skin. I'm sure you look lovely but if you don't feel it there are some this you can do. What's your budget like? I don't spend a lot on my appearance but find buying nice shampoo, conditioner and hair mask and nice skincare products helps me feel better. So I use kerastase and liz earle. I'd rather spend money on that than lots on makeup and clothes. Also love getting my hair cut and eyebrows and nails done. Maybe think about balayage for your hair as that tends to look quite young and you don't have to get it done as much as highlights.

I've just had a baby so can't do much exercise but walk a lot which makes me feel stronger and fitter and therefore better about myself. I used to enjoy the gym though, it can get addictive after you get over the initial fear of it and often only £20ish a month.

You're young and (although may not feel it) slim so will look good in lots of clothes. Maybe look in magazines, instagram, etc for some inspiration on style but it's important you feel comfortable in whatever you wear.

coralush, wrt protein/carbs, it needs to be a very gradual reduction in carbs. If you cut too much too soon, you will likely experience proper withdrawal symptoms, I.e headaches, feeling weak, cravings. Slowly, slowly, try to choose some protein over carb, e.g eggs and cheese for breakfast rather than toast. Try and avoid/reduce anything flour based, esp refined white flour. Boiled/mashed potato, swede etc is fine.

Have as much good fat as you like, it has no bearing on blood sugar/insulin.

Try to replace refined sugar foods with natural sugars like dried fruit (excellent) or normal fruit/ sweet veg eg carrots, red peppers, tomatoes.

This takes time, it is making choices towards protein, again and again. It fills you, it makes you satisfied, builds muscle, it will never make you fat even if you have a whole beef joint in one sitting (nobody can actually). Carbs, on the contrary, esp refined flour and sugar send your blood sugars haywire, which triggers excessive insulin production which tells your body to store fat even when you really don’t need anymore fat.

Only advice I will give, do it gradually, if cravings/ blood sugar crashes get too much, have a little bit, but go straight back to making better choices. It is a long game, but you will look and feel fantastic and will need to make no effort to control your weight. It is impossible to put on weight when you eat high protein/high fat and low (good) carbs.

Thanks LesTrois, that's really useful advice. I was carb free until dinner. And yes it did hit me hard! By 4pm, I felt really light headed and faint - so had a few noodles in my stir fry. I'm going to do it slowly like you advise, swap some carb free choices, where I would normally have bread etc. And yes to healthy fats! I love avocado and that's a bit of a no on slimming world!

Just jumping in to say, please don't give in to the pressure to paint yourself orange OP. Staying pale or your natural colour is far classier! No need to be an OompaLoompa, it's Autumn soon too...
