What's on DD's knee? Diagnosis please (photo included)

DD is almost 12 and is so self-conscious about these spots that she wouldn't wear shorts or dresses during the entire heatwave. There's eight hard spots in total. The don't itch or hurt and there been there for about a year?

WTF are they? Is a trip to GP in order? Or pharmacist? Or will they go away in their own time?

Warts maybe

DixieFlatline · 13/08/2018 00:00

They've been there for about a year, they're causing your daughter embarrassment to the extent that she wouldn't wear weather-appropriate clothing and for some reason you're asking here rather than having already been to the GP? Shock

Palendrominca · 13/08/2018 00:01

I’m not an expert, but the length of time they’ve been there and also the fact they are hard and not itchy makes me think they could be warts.

I had a quick google and it looks like the knee is quite a common place to get them.

JintyandtheJs · 13/08/2018 00:03

Mollucom Will go eventually. Can pop out jelly like inside with sterile needle

JintyandtheJs · 13/08/2018 00:04

Sorry- molluscom

Baconbutties · 13/08/2018 00:06

Looks like could be molluscum contagiosum but best to get a medical review as difficult to tell from just the photo

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 13/08/2018 00:06

I would say warts. But why on earth haven't you at least gone to the pharmacist?

NewTownVelocity · 13/08/2018 00:06

Dixie, they didn't cause embarrassment when she first got them. She didn't mention them and I didn't notice them. She mentioned today that they are the reason she doesn't like to wear shorts. Hence why I'm only now asking for advice. Do you usually rush to the Gp the second your DC gets a spot??

Thank you to everyone else for their suggestions.

Possibly molluscum contagiosum. My dd10 had these in a few different places and like your DD was self concious about wearing different clothes that made them visable. Especially swimming lessons at school.

Took her to GP who prescribed Moludab (think thats the name) However it didnt work. Took her back a few months later to see if there was anything else she could try but basically he said no thet just run their course. They eventually disappeared on their own after just over a year.

Velvetbee · 13/08/2018 00:07

Molloscum. Dip a cotton bud in tea tree oil every day and touch each one. A dark red spot will appear in the centre of each then rise to the surface where the top will go crusty and drop off

Dreamscomingtrue · 13/08/2018 00:07

They’re warts common in children, caused by a virus. They usually go after about a year by themselves. My grandson has them, I don’t think there’s anything that can be given by a doctor that makes them disappear. My grandson just has a special moisturiser rubbed on his skin after bathing as he has patches of eczema too on his arms and legs.

Cel982 · 13/08/2018 00:08

They look like molluscum contagiosum, OP - common and not at all worrying. They will go themselves in time without doing anything, but they can be treated if they're causing her a lot of distress.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 13/08/2018 00:11

Yep, it’s molluscum contagiosum.

The spots will go eventually but it can take ages and they may spread. You can get a lotion called Molludab; you paint it on and it breaks them down. It costs about £20 otc. Just as effective though, is to take a sterilised needle to one or two of the spots; then put on savlon or sudocrem and a plaster.

Agitating the spots causes the immune system to flare up against them and they will go red and angry, then dry up. It looks worse before it looks better, but it definitely works!

StillMedusa · 13/08/2018 00:14

Definitely Molloscum. My D1 was plastered in the things..all down her torso.
If you can bear to pop them them go faster but they do leave a tiny wee scar. They can stay for years!

Ilovemangoes · 13/08/2018 00:18

Molluscum contagiosum. Very common, will eventually go.

intuition · 13/08/2018 00:20

Molluscum contagiousum. My sons had them and a course of homeopathic drops for two weeks got rid of them.

Jux · 13/08/2018 00:23

Take her to chemist first thing Monday, better than waiting for gp. Only take to doc if chemist says you should.

Baconbutties · 13/08/2018 00:23

We used aloe Vera gel and they dried up within a couple of weeks after having them for a few months. Not sure if it was the aloe Vera or the alcohol in the gel but it worked for us!

Magicbugkiller · 13/08/2018 00:24

Molluscum- you need to pop them and then they will go (you my get more initially). We didn't pop my daughters and she had them for 3 years until GP friend said we needed burst them and they were gone within 6 weeks- she had hundreds all over her body.

NewTownVelocity · 13/08/2018 00:28

Thank you everyone. Just Googled molluscum and I think that's definitely it. I'd no idea such a thing existed.

I'll see what the pharmacist says tomorrow.
