12 hours into quitting smoking...

SinkGirl · 12/08/2018 19:46

I’ve been smoking - a lot - for 25 years. Managed to quit for a year once, then started again when my mum died. Since then I’ve been completely unable to quit despite many efforts - managed to mostly stop while pregnant but started again right away afterwards like an idiot.

I know I need to stop, it’s absolutely excruciating though. I am so tempted to just go and get some some but then the pain of today will have been a total waste of time.

Nicotene replacement does bugger all for me. I have a vape but it doesn’t seem to help either.

How long did this worst part last for you?

3 days is the hardest part. Count down until then. That is what I did. Good luck. You know it is worth it!

gamerchick · 12/08/2018 19:50

Have you tried all the replacements? I could only get on with the spray. Sometimes you have to just have an experiment.

Welliejellie · 12/08/2018 20:13

Well done you! I am not a smoker myself but my mum stopped on her 70 th birthday after smoking for over 50 years. She said the first 2 weeks were the hardest but after that it got much better. The day after she quit she spoke of herself as a non smoker and she felt this helped her rather than thinking of herself as an ex smoker!
Think of all the money you will save, why not but it away and treat yourself to something nice after the first month.

I wish you luck

I'm 48 hours ciggie free at 10pm!!!

I've done this before for a year. (I know, I know).

Day three will be an absolute cunt.

After three weeks, I was relatively ok.

BifsWif · 12/08/2018 20:35

I am one week free as of 10pm tonight. Get through the first three days and you’re well on your way.

Apparently the nicotine is out of your system by then.

You can do this, honestly you can. I’ve started excercising (not a lot!) and that seems to be helping.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 12/08/2018 20:36

Oh- and I used to (god that sounds weird) smoke 25g a DAY in tobacco!

Nooblynoo · 12/08/2018 20:37

The easiest thing for me when I stopped was not being around people or places I associated with smoking. Good luck.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 12/08/2018 20:43

Agreed. I've just had to ban DB from the house for a fortnight 😀😀

Gottokondo · 12/08/2018 20:44

Take a walk when it gets hard. The exercise helps and calms you down a bit. Once you're through this first week the period of time between the hard moments will get longer. You will be happy that you have persevered. If it gets too hard, post here. People can encourage you.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 12/08/2018 20:52

And sorry to jump on your thread- it's just nice to chat to someone who is going through it too.

MycatsaPirate · 12/08/2018 21:00

I stopped in February and saw the Stop Smoking nurse at the local surgery. She's lovely and has prescribed patches, inhalator and gum.

I did start again for two weeks at one point in late May but quit again and doing ok. Mainly use gum and inhalator now.

Worst thing is going out socialising and other people smoke.

SinkGirl · 12/08/2018 22:43

Thanks everyone. I can’t go out walking - if I go near a shop I will cave, so I’m stuck indoors tomorrow at least. Have a blood test on Tuesday morning so hoping I’m strong enough by then not to ruin it.

I’ve tried all the nrt stuff and it doesn’t help at all for some reason, which absolutely sucks. I tried champix once which helped at first but then I couldn’t keep it down.

Tonight has been bloody awful so far. I fear tomorrow might be worse. Wish I could knock myself out for the duration.

I have toddler twins so going out socialising isn’t an issue 😂

You've got this. 💙

I've downloaded an app which tells me how many cigarettes I've not smoked, etc.

UpstartCrow · 12/08/2018 23:47

Go to Amazon and buy Alan Carrs book Easiway to Quit. Its £3 second hand. You can quit without any unbearable withdrawal symptoms.

elephantoverthehill · 12/08/2018 23:55

OP you have done the hardest bit. You have made the decision. And you are going to stick to it because otherwise you will be disappointed in yourself and I will put on my teacher voice and tell you that you have let yourself down. So there! I have given up for six years and find the chewing gum really helpful, the nicorette fruit fusion or icy white

dingdongdigeridoo · 13/08/2018 00:02

Vaping can really work for some people. Have you got a juice with a high nicotine percentage? You’ll need the strong stuff at first but can then ease off after a few weeks. Get decent vape equipment too, the stuff from vape shops is so much better than the crap they sell in newsagents or pound shops. I found it was good for getting over the psychological hurdle, as I had something to focus on. I know a few really hardcore smokers who’ve managed to switch over.

Catmeouws · 13/08/2018 05:36

I stopped smoking 20 years ago. I smoked 40 a day. Everyday, now think the first 20 pounds I spend is "on the house", so to speak. I begrudge myself nothing. A bottle of wine, a blouse, a DVD, CD, a book, a present for someone else. Then I remember how I started running again. Within 2 years of quitting smoking, I ran the London Marathon. I used the nicotine gum. I think that some sort of nicotine replacement helps. It is such a big thing to do. I count quitting smoking, breaking my dependence on nicotine as one of my greatest achievements of my life. Do it, you will never regret it.

Catmeouws · 13/08/2018 05:39

PS. I read Alan Carrs book too.

Annalogy · 13/08/2018 05:52

I agree with PP in that you probably need a higher nicotine percentage in your vape. I honestly prefer using the vape to smoking now. It's worth a try Smile

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 13/08/2018 06:25

I agree- a decent vape helps. I’d tried nrt (5 different ones), acupuncture, hypnotherapy, a worse vape. Got a pockex and 18mg nicotine and hardly needed any willpower! 2 years on I only need 2-3mg nicotine now.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 13/08/2018 08:35

I've found an e-cig I actually get on with!

I bought from Electric Tobacconist online. They've always got offers on.

Flowerylampshade · 13/08/2018 08:37

Well done. It must be very difficult but I'm sure the long term benefits will be worth it. Keep going.

SinkGirl · 13/08/2018 09:13

I’m hanging in there but it’s bloody awful. I have a good vape and found it helped last time I quit but I didn’t get one until I was 3 or 4 days in. It’s so different from smoking, maybe I needed that break to forget what smoking was like.

About 24 hours in now and determined, but miserable 😂

OP posts:
ReggaetonLente · 13/08/2018 09:21

You are doing bloody well. Keep going. I gave up when we started TTC, fell pregnant quickly and that was that, but we lost my dad to a smoking related disease while I was pregnant and honestly that’s enough to ensure I’ll never pick a cigarette up again. I wouldn’t wish his illness on my worst enemy. He never met his first grandchild, never saw my brother get married, left his wife of 30 years alone in her retirement. He would trade every cigarette he ever smoked to be here with us.

You are doing the absolute best thing for your family. You aren’t ‘giving up’ anything, you are gaining back so much! The freedom you get from not needing to plan everything around fags is amazing (and even if you think you weren’t doing that... you were!).
