Can the weather make you feel unwell?

Been feeling sick and lethargic today, with aches in my back and thighs. Can't attribute it to anything other than the weather being so humid. Is this a thing??

My MIL certainly thinks so. Every ailment seems to be explained by it! I do feel very muggy humid days can make me feel unwell (headachy & low energy) but if you think about it biologically then it's hard to believe it. Obviously this excludes extremes! I'm sure people living in France/Spain/Portugal world have a very different experience

TrappedByATurtle · 12/08/2018 19:11

Yes. According to MIL at least!

I wonder why all of these MILs have decided this! Thanks for the replies.

I get headaches when the pressure changes. They are worse before a thunderstorm. I dont have headaches at any other time thank god.
Im currently in bed because my head is grumbling and its more comfy.

Sounds more like you have a kidney infection!

Redteapot67 · 12/08/2018 19:27

But yes - I get wheezy before a thunderstorm

It's certainly a contributing factor for me; I've been unwell on every 'first' shift of hot/humid weather in each job and every cycle of weather that we have. Entirely my fault, as I tend to think each time I'll cope better, then end up overheated and dehydrated. I know if I wasn't at work I'd feel grotty and warm, but not unwell, so it is the job and me not taking precautions, but I am never unwell in the cooler weather.

I know quite a few people who tell me they notice a change in pressure due to bad headaches etc., but I am grateful I've never had that experience myself, so can't speak on that.

I hope you feel better soon, OP

definitely bad headaches when there's a pressure change, sometimes even develop into migraines.
it's been researched in some places where there are dramatic pressure changes (e.g. along the Rockies in north america where they get the 'chinook' phenomenon - you can google 'chinook migraines').

I think humidity can also cause joint aches etc in some people. Often you might have to be susceptible to something in the first place, which explains why it doesn't happen to everyone.

In a similar vein - I find the heat makes me feel as though I can't get enough oxygen .

Sure that's a common feeling - but anyone know why ?

Interesting comments here! I think pressure is also very much to blame too! Early night for me, with my 5 month son (who doesn't like sleep) 😆

Hot weather makes me generally ill but I have lupus, apparently that’s why. So there is some kind of biological link between weather and how you’re feeling, but no idea how it works.

bionicnemonic · 12/08/2018 20:38

Sometimes my left ear stops working temporarily when the pressure changes happen!
It was in the paper recently that hot weather makes the suicide rate increase, possibly due to blood changes affecting the brain...

Heat stress is a thing, I’ve lost more than the usual amount of hair this summer and it’s the stress of the heat. Your heart has to work harder to cool you off and we often don’t drink enough which thickens the blood, again putting pressure on the heart. I have an autoimmune condition and have suffered this summer, it makes me feel dizzy, sick and weak.
