I am a 34 year old female. I have 5 children first child when I was 18.

I have basically been a stay at home mum with small jobs in between (cleaning, nursery work)

When I left school I did an apprentice job in administration and earned my nvq in customer services and administration but shortly after met my partner and had children.

My youngest started school last year and I let myself have a year just to feel normal again after looking after babies and children constantly.

Now I'm ready to start my life my husband has a brilliant job and earns well so I feel lucky that I can now concentrate on myself a little and find a job I would love to do (nursing)

Where do I even start? I don't remember my GCSE results and have none of my certificates Confused please help me on where to begin with it all.

You need a degree these days to do nursing. Start off with a years Access course to get your authorisation to do the degree. (Degree currently£9k p.a. and lasts 3 years.) Good luck Confused

You just need to do an access to nursing course at college for a year and you will need to do your Maths GCSE if you didnt pass or cannot find your certificate. You can usually do that alongside the access course.
They then help you apply to university for the nursing degree.
Good luck!

Oh wow thank you.

9k jeeeeze maybe I'll have to look into something else.

I will now spend the day researching. Thank you so much

I am planning to retrain to get into nursing. Although the 9k a year is a lot you don't have to start paying that back until you start working and even then it won't be much on a newly qualified nurses wage. The question is can you afford not to work for the next 4 years until you qualify? That's what I'm trying to work out myself right now! You could probably do some HCA work while you are doing the access course as it tends to be 2 or 3 days a week. Not sure if you'd be able to work while doing the degree due to placements.

flippyflapper · 12/08/2018 16:34

Tisty hi.

Right now I don't work, and any work I have done over the 15/16 years really hasn't made a difference as wasn't earning alot. Luckily DH earns well and I'm in a position to be able to go explore and learn. My children are all in school now too.

The only thing I'm worried about is it being out of work for so long and getting back into it all again and potential interviews etc as I'm so out of the loop of everything.

I've found a course near me it's 9.30am-3pm and it says around the 3 grand mark. It's a higher education into health and looks to be a year long. I have emailed the contact given and hoping I'm not to late to get into this september.

Good luck on your journey

Go for it! I have a friend who arrived back in the UK with nothing but a suitcase after her relationship ended. She started in nursing homes, did her degree around shift work, and is now a matron. She was, I think, about 10 years older than you are now.

There is an NHS website that shows you lots of other healthcare related jobs, some you might not have even thought about/heard about.

Agree with an access course, it is tailored exactly to you. You might have to do GCSE maths along side it if you can't find your certificate.

flippyflapper · 12/08/2018 18:07

Thank you so much.

I'm so nervous but excited that I may actually get to do something for myself.

Going to look on the nhs website now

So I received an email this morning and I am booked into an assessment and interview session for late joiners. It's in September.

My stomach is doing flips, I don't suppose anyone has any experience in this do they and what to expect. It's 2hrs long

Will you be eligible for student loans (not sure if there's an age limit?)

If you can get a student loan, don't worry about the amount that fees cost, they're covered by the loan and if you're going to be a nurse, unless you end up being a nurse practitioner or senior manager, you'll never earn enough to pay much of it back.

Good luck.

ems137 · 13/08/2018 12:53

I knew I'd passed my GCSEs but couldn't remember what the results or exam boards they were from.

I did a lot of googling and was able to find out which exam boards my school used in my year of study. I applied on their website and they sent me a copy of my results.

Storm4star · 13/08/2018 13:35

The assessment is likely to be maths and english. Don't worry about it too much. It doesn't mean you won't get onto the course if you fail, they will likely just recommend extra classes to bring you up to speed. Then they'll talk to you about the course, what it entails etc and you can ask any questions you have. I think you can get something called an "adult learning loan". Good luck OP Smile

Well done op. I was also at home with many dc, did rubbish at school after zero support at home regarding studying. I am in a low paid menial job with no prospects /chance of change.
Your dc will be very proud of you - and also that you were around for them at home too!
Best of both you are!!

flippyflapper · 13/08/2018 16:30

Thank you all.

The whole idea of the assessment is freaking me out, but I'm not going to let the anxiety put me off.
If I need to do my GCSE again I will, my son is going to be doing his soon also as he is going into year 11 he said we can work together which I thought was sweet of him.

I'm honestly no smart cookie I'm terrible at maths and the homework the older kids get I wouldn't even no where to start so it's going to be challenging.

Thank you for your kind comments

Was just checking because tuition fees are different in Wales, but that's of no use to you!
