My daughter has been given diazepam for back pain. I thought diazepam was for mental health issues ? Sgecsaid seldoc this morning. And that's what they have given her ? Confused

Diazepam works as a relaxant for joints and muscles... I take it occasionally for an aggravated AC joint. Does the trick when used with anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen.

Bombardier25966 · 12/08/2018 11:59

A quick Google would have told you it is a muscle relaxant.

NaToth · 12/08/2018 12:05

And a very effective one at that. A short course at a low dose carries little or no risk.

Many medications have multiple uses. I was once quite bemused to find that lemsip helped my painful tooth.

bigchris · 12/08/2018 12:08

It was the only thing that worked for me when my back seized up, painkillers didn't touch it, it loosens the muscles so you can move again and ease it

Yourmysunshine2 · 12/08/2018 12:09

@stewpots it says it can cause server drowsiness. She has a baby to look after. Which is a bit worrying

I know... I was bemused because I was initially on Tramadol Smile

Odiepants · 12/08/2018 12:15

I was given diazepam for a frozen shoulder. It was the only thing that worked but it did knock me out for a good 12 hours.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 12/08/2018 12:15

Well it all depends on the dosage. The entry level dose isn't going to send her sparko on the floor. And possibly better for her ability to care for her child than being incapacitated through pain.

JellySlice · 12/08/2018 12:27

Diazepam is a godsend for muscle spasm. Several members of my extended family have had it, including me. Our experience is that the 5mg starting dose 2-3 times a day does not cause drowsiness unless combined with a sedating painkiller such as codeine. NSAIDs such as naproxen aren't sedating and we find that they are fine with diazepam.

The GPs have often prescribed a triple-whammy of diazepam, codeine and naproxen. None of my family who tried it could cope with it. It helped the pain, but turned them into semi-conscious zombies. TBH if they needed that much pain relief they weren't capable of looking after anyone before taking the meds, anyway.

Personally, I don't feel competent to drive after a few days on diazepam. It has quite a long half-life, so the effects are cumulative. But I was fine to look after my dc.

Yourmysunshine2 · 12/08/2018 13:27

@jellyslice Dd said they gave her Diazepam 2mg & naproxen is 500mg

2mg will make her a little more relaxed (and in less pain) but won't flake her out. The warning is because the manufacturers have to cover every possibility. You'll find that an awful lot of drugs have death as a possible side effect, but they're still widely prescribed because the chances are minuscule.

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/08/2018 14:00

Naproxen is an anti inflammatory and 2mg of diazepam is the lowest dose, she should be ok.

I was given 2mg diazepam after Mum died, to get to sleep and to get me through the funeral. It just kind of dulls things a bit, it doesn’t get you wasted or anything.

It’s not that it stops things hurting, you just don’t notice it as much.

milkysmum · 09/09/2018 23:21

I have sciatica and the doctor has just given me naproxen and 2mg diazepam. To be honest it's not even touching the pain never mind sedating me!

Fstar · 09/09/2018 23:29

Very low dose so probably wont have huge effect. I suffer tension and back issues and recoment sleepeze from Boots, really relaxes everything to allow sleep, i take the one a night when needed

MarcieBluebell · 09/09/2018 23:31

Milkysmum. So sorry your in pain. My sister had terrible sciatica recently and diazepam did nothing. I hope they give you something else to try if you need it.

Yambabe · 10/09/2018 01:05

I thought it was a knockout tranquiliser kind of thing.

DH had it last year when he had issues with kidney stones and had to have a stent fitted, he used to take it at night to help him get off to sleep.

My doc prescribed it for me a couple of months ago when I had to go for blood tests as I have a phobia of needles. I had to take one about an hour before my appointment and if I was still anxious 15 minutes before take another.

Have to say it didn't have much of an effect on me. Didn't make me drowsy and din't really stop my anxiety. Deep breathing, gripping DH's hand so hard I made it bleed and a no-nonsense brisk and efficient nurse seemed to be enough to get me through the experience!
