Induction or gas hob? Dual fuel? Give me the benefit of your experience.

Just that really. My much used gas cooker (free standing, gas hob and oven) has just about had it and I'm in the market for a new one. Should i get a fully gas one, dual fuel, or all electric (induction)? I cook a lot. I love cooking, and love the responsiveness of a gas hob. Would I regret going electric? TIA.

We have electric and I miss the responsiveness of a gas hob. I also get frustrated by the controls that don’t come on for cold fingers but do when your jumper sleeve brushes against them...OTOH, can be completely turned off if small DC try to play with it!

Induction every time. Wouldn’t have anything else now. Easy to clean, responsive, fast, controllable.

Induction jobs are responsive - just like gas. Traditional electric ones are not (including the ones which look like induction)

My only gripe with my induction hob (and I’ve had 3 in various kitchens) is the weird humming noise when turned up high.

Induction everytime, (not electric or ceramic which are very different). I hate it when I visit and cook at my mum's, the gas is so slow. Induction is fast and responsive, I can boil a pot of water from cold on my induction quicker than the kettle. You need to get good pans though, crap induction pans like tefal are slow. Safer too as no naked flames.

Not so good if you like shaking pans or woks about, but I have adapted and is not a problem.

Oh and very very easy to clean.

I love my gas hob, and even though it's a pain to keep clean I wouldn't replace it with an induction.

Agree with Best. I wish I’d taken up Miele’s offer to let me try an induction before I bought mine. It’s great for boiling pans of water, utterly hopeless for frying. We’ve not had decent pancakes on Shrove Tuesday since we bought the damn thing.

I had to have either induction or electric when I moved in 11 years ago. Certainly didn't want electric (would've preferred gas but it wasn't an option) so chose induction. It's brilliant. As responsive as gas but your pans don't get burnt bottoms and the handles don't get hot from gas flames.

I do love induction now Had it first in rented house, then had to get one in bought house as I refused point blank to keep ceramic one. We went with cheap lower power one that just plugged in, rather than proper plumbed in better one. That was a mistake, as while still great and faster than gas, it’s not as powerful as rented house one.

Mine get burnt bottoms. Must be doing something wrong.

I used to be set on gas hobs and gas ovens.

I've found electric fan ovens to be great and wouldn't go back. While I've been happy with gas hobs (wouldn't use an electric one), I've read reviews about induction and would like to try these in future.

Ooh, so much to think about here! I've had DH read the thread and he's come around to the idea that induction is worth a look now. Thank you all!

Love our induction hob (inherited it when we bought our house). Super easy to clean glass top and it's very responsive. You will want decent quality, induction safe pans if you don't have them already. All of ours were fine apart from our frying pans and wok. We bought Ikea frying pans (about £15 each) and a new wok. They've all been great.

Our saucepans are some 18yo John Lewis ones and some Judge ones.

We don't have that problem with our induction, it cooks very evenly accross the surface. The only time we've had problems is when they aren't good solid induction pans which make contact with the surface.

We've had 2 tefal pans burn and the patterned plate thing at the bottom fall off/leave marks on the glass, again because they aren't solid at the bottom.

I love induction but made sure to go on which and get a decent rated one. We have a neff and it is great. Definitely do a temporary subscription to which before deciding.

I have a love hate relationship with my induction - I cook - a lot.
I love the safety, dcs like to cook a lot and a live flame is more dangerous. Handles do not get as hot.The glass can be hard to clean - food can become severely stuck to the surface. The glass has been damaged in several places - the edges are chipped - cast iron is not recommended for this reason - it damages the glass. The responsive is ok, as long as you get good pans some of the pans we have bought don't work very well and take an age to heat up. I certainly don't regret getting a gas wok installed at the same time, I use it for stir frying and cast iron pans, kids don't use it. We will have to replace the induction soon as it is literally falling to pieces it's 6 years old and I'm really hoping they have improved the toughness of the glass - and get one where the glass sits inside a metal frame - to reduce chipping.

Definitely induction, just love mine, it's so responsive !ike gas, but a lot cleaner, and the hob is so easy to clean.
