Do you believe in luck?

I am incredibly unlucky. I don’t feel unlucky, I feel the opposite actually. I’m very optimistic on the whole. But after feeling for a little while that this level of haphazardness cannot be normal and even making huge contingency plans, my friends have even starting remarking on it because it’s always so random that happens.

Examples include;

  • all my maternity appointments over 3 high risk pregnancies being cancelled or never booked and no bugger telling me. I didn’t even have booking appointments or 12 week scans or blood tests booked, I had to call them every week to remind them of what I should have booked. This was over two different hospitals Confused
  • I order something broken on average twice a month
  • amazon deliveries rarely come and I have to argue every time about where it is
  • orders forgotten in Starbucks/Costa/Argos/McDonalds practically every time. I have to keep my receipt in my hand because I’m always the chump standing there when everyone else has gone “sorry my love, are you waiting for something?”
  • At work there’d always be some huge misfortune that was not my fault but because it was always me, it was seen to be me. Ie projector always blowing up for my meetings, power cuts, I actually got stuck in a lift with our committee chairman for 40 mins during a huge meeting which couldn’t go ahead till we were rescued. Once, applicants to our committee were let in by reception (this is so against protocol, I can’t believe it happened) and left to wander freely about the building without contacting me, so I had to search the building for them and eventually found them sitting in a room in the basement. I was told off for not looking after guests.
  • letters that are like “oh hey, you have haven’t paid your tv license/parking fine for a car you don’t own/bill for a house you don’t live in” so now you have to appear in court on xx day. With the car ticket one I even had to contact the mayor of Westminster because the council refused to accept I didn’t own the car, even with 3 letters from the DVLA!
  • my bank card is broken again. I’ve had 6 this year, they just stop working.
  • the woman whose house we were buying (that fell through, as did 2 others) managed to get my address from the agent and would come round randomly and wake up my baby before I had to threaten to call the police
  • as a kid I had 8 bikes stolen from various places around town. They would even leave all my cousins bikes behind and just take mine while we were in the shop or from a friends garden Confused
  • I once found a cats tooth in my packed lunch

I wouldn’t have said I believe in luck, but I am starting to feel unlucky!

I am only wondering if I am unlucky because other friends have said it. And through the years people say “oh it’s always you” when I hadn’t really considered that it was always me before. I’d laugh about things and I thought this kind of thing happens to everyone 😂 I’m really lucky in other ways, I do win loads of competitions and raffles, close scrapes where bad things could have happened, like I said very happy with life overall.

My parent did die of a very rare cancer when I was a child, had a condition which I have inherited but I don’t consider that part of the luck spectrum really, it just is life and can’t be helped. That’s why I didn’t list it.

At work in my future contingency plans, I used to put DONT USE LIFTS, TAKE STAIRS, and people would think I was mad. But you just never know! Grin

beingthere I did consider that and the hospital at the time sent a test letter to see why I wasn’t getting correspondence. That one arrived ok. It was the only one that did 😂

The car fine was a fraud I believe.

If someone were to ask me if I was lucky or unlucky, I'd say lucky without hesitating and then struggle to quantify it. I certainly haven't had a lottery win or any win at all to back up my claim.

I dont pay much attention to the low level 'unlucky' stuff. And when the shit hits the fan, I tend to think of all the ways things could be worse.

I think I put a lot of mundane stuff into the lucky pile.

Trying to not out myself but I lost a child to cancer and have another with a serious disability that needs 24/7 care and will all their life. Another DC has a drug addiction. I've got a painful condition that I've had many operations on and will always be there. I have a MH problem as a result of the above and have been seeing a Psychiatrist and on strong meds for two decades.

There are aspects of my life that are great. Been with DH since the 80's and he is the best. ALL of my DC are wonderful, even the two that are struggling, they bring me joy.

Worldpeace123 · 11/08/2018 14:08

Yeah and I've run out of it. Totally.

tectonicplates · 11/08/2018 14:13

Is it only Amazon parcels that go missing, or other couriers and post too? Maybe you have a rogue delivery driver who keeps nicking stuff. There was one address I lived at where my post constantly went missing - it's never happened to me while living at any other address. I assumed we had a rogue postman, but there's a chance it could've been the people in the flat who shared an entrance with us.

beingthere · 11/08/2018 14:24

Windbeneathmybingowings Did that one letter go to the same department, posted to the same place by the same person?

Did you follow up the car fraud, how did they give your details?

I believe unlucky things happen to people, just as lucky things do, and some people will be outliers and have more unlucky things happen over a finite number of years, that’s the way averages work. But a repeated pattern smacks of more than bad luck. Find the common denominator and you may be able to solve some of the puzzles.

For instance, SIL is a hopeless case (not saying you are at all) and according to her she is “unlucky”. Example, she rarely got the letters sent from school. SIL puts it down to her never getting letters she should, unlucky. MIL decided this was because the teachers hated her. It turned out that she had never changed the address with the school when she moved or left s forwarding address at the old place/Royal Mail.

Look for the patterns. Bad luck doesn’t do patterns, it’s random. If there is a pattern it is engineered in some way, genetically, purposefully, by fraud...

Windbeneathmybingowings · 11/08/2018 14:54

The car was a one off, the number plate was faked and linked to me. The police were involved and there was no comeback on me because of the lengths I went to to have the fines taken off me, ie contacting DVLA 3 times, documenting everything with the council in writing, contacting my MP and the Mayor for Westminster.

The letter was sent by the maternity dept to my house. I watched the lady generate it at the reception desk. They never have the same staff at the hospital so I don’t believe they all went missing, I think lots of them never got sent or indeed had no reason to be sent, because my appointments weren’t even being made like they were supposed to be. Ie doctor says I’ll send you for booking. Doesn’t. No booking appt. I realise and refer myself. By now too late for 12 week scan through usual route. Nurse says she’ll book it immediately. Doesn’t. I call up and complain to PALS, the scan and bloods get booked and I’m told I need to see a consultant and have more scans but appts aren’t made through further error. I speak to PALS again and get emergency appts made but the letters don’t get sent for my 24 week scan so I miss that and then have to complain again so emergency scan is done, then consultant complains about how everything has happened so vows to make all my appts himself. Doesn’t. I have meeting with head of Midwifery and everything is sorted out. Until I get pregnant again and the cycle of ridiculousness continues. This is what I mean by unlucky. What comes easily to someone else, is a constant annoyance for me.

i believe in it

i can be a little bit of a pessimist but i always have an inner feeling that i will always generally be ok,their might be a blip but i just know thinks will work out better and i will be fine

nd this may seem big headed but im the strongest person i know but thats come from redundancy, illness and bringing 3 kids up totally on my own,no grandparents sleep overs,no maintenance so to speak,no dads about to lighten the load etc

flopsyrabbit1 · 11/08/2018 15:00

i should also mention that i believe that some people no matter how hard they try just dont ever seem to get a break

Windbeneathmybingowings · 11/08/2018 15:03

Sorry to hear of everyone else’s troubles Flowers I have been made redundant 4 times but for me I don’t think of it as unlucky, it was just a way of being paid to leave a job I didn’t like anyway and I had good payouts. I understand that if you like or depend on the job it can be horrific.

That is so true.

Did you actually own a cat? At the time of the packed lunch incident I mean.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 11/08/2018 15:06

No! I didn’t! 😂

OP posts:
IamPickleRick · 11/08/2018 15:11

This is pretty unlucky. Going by your updates you aren’t even including loads of things that other people would consider to be really unlucky.

TooTrueToBeGood · 11/08/2018 15:13

I once found a cats tooth in my packed lunch

Old joke - what's worse than finding a worm in your apple? Finding half a worm in your apple?

Where was the rest of the cat and what was really in your sandwiches? 😃

CocteauTwins · 11/08/2018 15:17

Christ yanbu! Cats tooth in a packed lunch brings it to a whole new level Grin

SerPants · 11/08/2018 15:21

Could the bike thefts and cat's tooth have been somebody playing pranks on you? Or someone with some kind of grudge trying to freak you out?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 11/08/2018 15:24

Maybe they rigged the lift as well and these are all just bungled assassination attempts Grin

OP posts:
EmilyBishopmyconfession · 11/08/2018 15:33

Possibly- maybe you were mean to have a horse's head in your bed but the incompetent assassin could only manage a cat's tooth in the lunch?

SerPants · 11/08/2018 15:33

Maybe you're in your very own Final Destination movie?

NT53NJT · 11/08/2018 15:34

What is luck? Is it just another name for coincidence?
