Looking for some advice,
I met someone just after I had my little girl.
We broke up and I moved him out the house right away as it wasn’t working out due to his selfish behaviour.
We spoke a little after the brake up but have not spoke since my daughter 1st birthday - 6 months ago.
Let’s put it this way when he moved in he moved his bed in his tv and all the kitchen things. Because of this all mine went to a local woman’s shelter.
When we broke up he said I could have everything. Yet he only wanted the kettle and toster (plates and a few odd items) I handed them over with in 24 hours. Now we have not spoke in 6 months he has now informed my mother he wanted everything back !
The bed the tv all the pots and pan the lot !
In this 6 months he has been living rent and bill free in a property my mother owns till he found a new place ! 6 months to find a new place is more like a piss take as he clearly has found a place now he is aware my mother has sold the house he is staying in for free !
What rights do I have to give him everything back ? Should he help fund me new items as he helped me donate my old items as he wanted his in the house I live ? I have offered him them back but he told me 6 months ago he didn’t want them back ? Do I just ignore him and keep my door locked ?
This guy has clearly used my family for a free place to stay and me as a storage unit for him ! I am a single mother on a low income (I am actually better off not working it’s that low) how can he expect me to replace everything in my home ???

Have you got any mention of you keeping the stuff in a text, ie in writing? As far as you're concerned he gave the things to you so isn't entitled to them back - but it may be tricky if he denies ever saying that. I would stay away from the 'but you've had 6 months free living' argument - that's a separate 'agreement' between him and your mum I guess, it wasn't conditional on you keeping the stuff? Perhaps your mum could put it to him that if he reneges on his verbal agreement with you, she'll be pursuing him for 6 months costs and he'll get his stuff when he's paid her. Not sure what the law says, though!

I have it in text form on my mams phone. Thank you x

In a private rental agreement a landlord only has to keep leftover stuff in storage for 6 months before disposing of them as they wish. I would imagine an ex would have even less rights. Id tell him to stop being a cunt and he can have his stuff back as long as he has replacements for your stuff. Otherwise he needs to jog on. If he still harrasses you suggest he goes to a solicitor as it is a civil matter. I doubt he is going to waste money on solicitor fees so there is nothing much he can do.

No. He gave you those things. He can't just ask for them back now. They were a gift and in exchange he's had six months' worth of free accommodation! That has to be worth a few thousand pounds.

Don't take any nonsense from him, OP. He hadn't asked you to store them. He gave them to you. They are yours.

Thanks everyone. He hasn’t even had the respect to contact me about this matter and to old do it via my mother. Because of this he can do one I have looked into it and I have messages to my mother from him saying 6 months ago I can just have the stuff.
Thanks everyone . x

This isn't quite the same but my ExP asked me for clothes and things he'd left here, after running off and leaving me! But it was also after about 6 months NC. By this time I'd thrown his stuff out anyway as I didn't want it in my house (I'd done that around the 3 month mark) so I just told him I'd chucked it and to not contact me again!

UnaOfStormhold · 15/06/2018 10:58

Could you say that he can have them back when he's paid 6 months rent?

LimboLuna · 15/06/2018 11:20

What an absolute knob head, so he's had 6 months rent free & you were expected to safely and securely store his stuff for him for those 6 months.

No, just no.

LimboLuna · 15/06/2018 11:21

If he gets lip suggest he tries this www.itv.com/beontv/shows/judge-rinder

Just if anyone wants to know the outcome
He told my mam I could have the bed if I was to buy it off him.
I simply told him no I will buy a new one and he can carry on and pay for smoke to collect it.
He then caused a fuss saying I had men on the bed what is the lowest blow of them all because he clearly didn’t know me at all and knows I am anything like that.
I didn’t bite let him carry on and said I could keep the bed for him to just want the tv. My dad felt sorry as I no longer had a smart tv for the little one and is now paying for me to have vargin so it’s a win win hahaa thanks everyone for your help x

What a pathetic excuse for a man.

twohandstwokids · 20/07/2018 09:28

I wouldn't t engage in any of t until he talks to your personally. Your mum should be stuck in the middle of this. And he needs to grow some balls and talk to you.
