Have you ever made a big move from somewhere you and your kids love all for the sake of your career? (And not even the breadwinner’s career because he can work from anywhere)

I’m so heartbroken to take the kids out of their nursery and from their friends and move so far away they would probably never see them again.

But equally, my career will stagnate if we don’t move.

It’s not even about money, we’d probably have less if we move, and less work-life balance, but I’d (hopefully) be happy at work.

Well, I was that kid! Where would you be moving to?

Back to the UK to where I grew up from Oslo. My OH is Norwegian but not originally from Oslo.

How did it turn out for you?

We had a summer party at kindergarten yesterday and it suddenly hit me how much I love it and I was/am going to throw it all away because I dislike my job and also partly because it would be nice to have family close.

Hmm better to do it now when they are still so young than in 10 years time when they have started to grow little roots and form firm friendships. Kids adapt IMO.

You need to be happy in your job. We spend a lot of time at work as adults and I couldn't bear (is that the right 🐻?) to be unhappy at work.

I would move.

They are 4 and 2. Eldest would start school in the UK in September but I don’t think we can move that quickly. He doesn’t start school until next year here.

But thank you for reassuring me. My OH moved across Norway when he was 7, I alwayd stayed put so never knew. Just so scared they won’t enjoy it. And work hours are longer.

But you’re right, I’m not happy with work right now. It’s not going anywhere either.

(Some of my work is copywriting and I get confused in the 🐻 too 🙈)

We were 9 and 5 when my parents moved us to America and 12 and 8 when we moved back. I won't lie - it was disruptive. But it was so worth it. They later moved to India and each of us went with them at different times. They were great experiences and I'm a better, broader person for it.

That is so comforting to hear. I know a lot of expats here moving every 2 years around the world, I know kids are adaptable. I guess it just feels so different when you’re actually having to be responsible for your decision.

It doesn’t help we have amazing weather here right now. It’s like paradise. (30C everyday for 4 weeks, yet in winter it’s -20C)
