Hi, I’m after some advice. We’ve recently moved into a detached property after doing considerable refurbishment. From day one our neighbours have been keeping an eye on everything we do by initially pretending to be friendly. So the main problems seem to be about the fact there was a double fence, the better one being the neighbours and the one on our side was a few small leaning concrete posts doing nothing. The neighbours told us the small fence was theirs (after it was removed) and we have stolen their land. After research we found out the small fence was actually ours and was installed years before their house was built so they have blatantly lied. We are having a 6ft double gate installed at side of house and have had a brick pillar built for the gate to be fitted to and they’ve told us if we don’t lower the pillar and gates to 4ft they will take legal action about stealing their land. I explained we wanted a high gate for security, we’ve small children and a dog and they told us we were ridiculous. What has it to do with them what we do on our property though?
To add to this they’ve complained about a security light on our garage that their cat sets off and told us our brick lights in driveway are on for too long. They complained they were on at 11pm at night when they drove past after being out for a meal, they can’t see them from their own house or drive so in no way do they bother them. Other neighbours have said what a good job we’ve done with the renovations yet next door only have complaints. To top it off they say we are neighbours from hell, however we feel we are the ones being harassed when we just want a quiet life and enjoy our home. We do our best to avoid them but this weekend they saw us get out of car and proceeded to shout at us about sending a solicitor’s letter in front of our 2 year old which I’m upset and angry about.
So my question is what do we do? We’ve renovated our house to a high standard ( wanted it to be our forever home) so selling is out of the question as we won’t get back what we’ve paid out.
