Robin in my utility room

CisMyArse · 09/05/2018 06:23

Been away for the weekend and upon opening the door to my tiny utility room, I was met with a bundle of leaves and various stuff scattered on the floor and a perfectly formed nest in the crook of my kit bag hanging on the wall. It seems a little Robin has worked feverishly all weekend, flying in and out of the tiny open window, to build its home.

Would it be the same one that took residence underneath my shed? Either way, there was plenty of coming and going since my husband cleared all the laundry while I was away.

I can happily leave my kit bag until the robin is gone and it's no pain to clean up after the poop but is this workable? Can we enter the room daily, sometimes much more, use a noisy laundry and tumble dirier, sort recycling etc? Without disturbing them? What should I do?

How have I missed this? Best thread EVER, I’m so jealous!
I demand daily photo updates.
Please.

Wonderful!! Smile Can see the pic, no poblem.

CisMyArse · 04/06/2018 18:14

Well, they're growing fast. Hardly going in much and only doing so when Mum and Dad are out hunting worms. They're covered in a black downy feather and I'm pretty certain all 6 are alive! One looks weaker so I don't know....

I'm actually really worried that when they start hoping around, one will fall from the nest. DH and I are considering putting some old duvets stacked up to catch the chick (tiled floor otherwise). How ethical is it to check for casualties and popping them back up to their platform?

Aaargh didn't want to interfere in another Nature but.....

So gorgeous! And yes, if they fall out you're fine to put them back in, although that doesn't happen often. The chicks tend to know enough to stay in the nest.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 05/06/2018 21:52

Oh wow!

Joinourclub · 05/06/2018 21:57

Oh how lovely! We have a nest in our hedge. I can't see the chicks but I can hear their chirping.

userxx · 05/06/2018 21:59

Robins are not daft!

CisMyArse · 06/06/2018 21:01

appreciate they're not daft but a clutch is usually
Lot smaller than 6 and I'm just concerned one will fall out.

Rightly or wrongly, there's a couple of old
Duvets underneath now.

Meant they aren't daft by building a nest indoors 😈. I've no idea how many babies they have but 6 does sound a lot to me.

Littleredboat · 06/06/2018 22:06

Oh I love them.
And good shout on the duvets.

PersonAtHome · 06/06/2018 23:07

Well done with the duvets. Keep the pics coming! A few years ago at our old house we had a blackbird nest in some ivy just outside our back door. It was such a treat to watch the babies grow. Sadly one died but the other two flew the nest.

CisMyArse · 11/06/2018 20:30

I checked on my little chicks on Friday and they'd grown substantially - all their little heads facing outwards and resting on the rim of the nest. I'll post a pic when I'm on my phone. Am staggered to report that all 6 are surviving well. My duvet underneath was pristine white still so no movement as such.

Just peeked now and the nest is empty and my duvet is poo-spattered! A frantic flapping of infant wings told me that one had flow to the top shelf and was stuck in a wicker box - I couldn't leave it so I closed the door tight to make sure of no escapees and very slowly dislodged the little chick It grabbed for the nearest purchase - my finger - so I slowly slowly dispatched it onto the duvet. 2 others were swinging on the strap of my gym bag, 2 were on my straw basket on the floor and the 6th was on the top of the washing machine. I left the room and made the usual point of sitting quietly in the garden for the parents to fly over head and check me out before checking on their babies. Mum and Dad have worked so hard - 6 healthy babies!

I'm so so pleased, despite my spattered utility room. I probably wont go in again now especially since they need to now remain wary of the world around them so unlikely there'll be any more pics. I'm on the internet looking for robin boxes to put around the house and fences so that this lot will raise their next lot somewhere else.

That’s just beautiful. And so kind of you to let them get on with it!

CisMyArse · 12/06/2018 20:27

Here's a few pics. Been in tonight for a peek and spotted 3 chicks. - 2'on my wicker basket and 1 swinging on the handle of my sports bag. There's a load of cheeping and chirping from nearby trees so am not sure whether half have already moved out.

Aww... lovely.

They'll be fledging soon and you'll miss them so much.

CisMyArse · 12/06/2018 21:46

Molly you weren't wrong about the poop. It's everywhere!

CisMyArse · 13/06/2018 14:40

Actually, any ideas how long they'll be before totally leaving? I don't really want to go in now they're getting more independent just in case they panic and escape prematurely. Lots of cats in this area. Sad

OP posts:
MollyHuaCha · 13/06/2018 16:48

Sounds like you've made them feel at home OP. Don't think they're going anywhere soon...

CisMyArse · 14/06/2018 19:33

Well, my feathered friends have gone. Last one flew out yesterday evening and they've not been back. I think I hear them occasionally whistling like mini kettles from the thick trees at the bottom of my garden - there's lots of whistling so it must be them. That said, there's a family of blue tits here too so it could be them.

Mamma Robin still swings on my washing line and our garden is most definitely her home.

I feel honoured to have been a part of this - even with the poop everywhere - that's a job for the weekend. I'm delighted that all 6 chicks fledged - that's quite something.

So happy to hear they all survived and have now flown the nest. Now you know that you need to prepare for next year Grin

Apparently teapots make the perfect house for them. I cant wait till we get our garden done and i can encourage wildlife.

P.s. love the nickname Wink
