Received expensive item in the post

My neighbour took delivery of a parcel for me today, it's not in our name or in the name of the previous occupiers who lived here since the house was built.

I opened it up to see if I could find a return address. Inside was a brand New, expensive mobile and nothing else.

I assume the phone will be locked once reported missing so this isn't about me keeping it or not, I was just wondering how much effort should I go to to sort this out? I've tried calling the courier but it said a 40+ minute wait and I don't really want to waste my own money sorting this out.

Could you pop the couriers name into google and see if it gives you a customer services email address? And contact them on there?

Though to be fair I don't think the courier will be much help. Was there any kind of a dispatch note or paperwork with the mobile at all? It's the seller of the phone who you need to try to contact.

Nothing in he parcel at all. Its very odd. They've a 'general enquiries' email which is apparently not for specific pacrel enquiries but I'll send them something.

Their service isn't generally great though so I agree they won't be much help. Not really sure what else I can do.

Was it sent from a shop e.g. Amazon or from a person?

AdaColeman · 20/04/2018 19:48

Check your credit cards to see if you have been wrongly charged for the item as part of a fraud?

ILikeMyChickenFried · 20/04/2018 19:48

The address label looks shop like but there's nothing identifying he sender on it

I vaguely remember a scam that sounds like that?

ILikeMyChickenFried · 20/04/2018 20:00

Hmm... I've no Cc and I doubt enough cash in my account to buy this. I hope it's not a scam

Hmmm - yes there was a spate of similar frauds where something would be ordered fraudulently from a mobile operator and a fake courier would turn up a little later saying it had been delivered incorrectly and they would take it back. So don't give it to anyone...

Ok, thanks for the tip

Yes twins- I seem to remember that too.
OP - do you have a forwarding address for the previous owners- or does a neighbour?
I just had a google using" phone delivery scam" And there were loads. Which? was quite detailed. I have paraphased below:
The scam is the delivery of a high value items, and then either intercepting the delivery or collecting a "wrongly delivered item" from you. Then you find out a direct debit going out as someone has obtained enough personal details to set up an account in your name and ordering an expensive item. ( or in your case the previous owners)
If a courier comes to collect an item at your home, always ask them for ID before handing anything over. Try to get details of registration number of vehicle as well. It’s also important to contact the police and Action Fraud, too.
It is likely that your old neighbours will have a DD taken out in their name. Be very careful when someone comes to collect the item.
Bit surprising there is no paperwork though.

The scam I heard was someone would deliberately order to a different address.
then turn up ask for it with some type of excuse.
you give it to them.
They then don't pay for it/contract or get a refund for it being lost in post
They get a free phone/product.
You (the address it was sent to) gets chased by the company for payment.
