Would you report this job applicant?

I have to keep the details vague so as not to out me or the person concerned.

I am in the midst of marking applications for a role within our organisation. One of the applicants has claimed to have a certain type of work experience. In order to do this type of work you have, by law, to have a particular professional qualification. The applicant has not stated that they have this qualification, despite there being a specific box on the application form for recording such qualifications.

It is possible that they have the qualification but have simply not mentioned it, despite it being relevant to their application. There is also a bit of a grey area in that you can do work in the same area whilst under supervision of someone with the relevant professional qualification, but it would not really be possible to be adequately supervised whilst doing the specific role that they have claimed to do.

Would you report them to the professional regulator? It could result in them being fined and their fitness to join the profession being reviewed.

NO I wouldn't, especially if I wasn't 100% sure they were lying. Reporting them is a little harsh. If you're unsure about them then don't invite them for an interview

insancerre · 01/04/2018 11:11

No I wouldn't report them

Canwejustrelaxnow · 01/04/2018 11:12

I'm not sure. I have a professional qualification but I'm no longer a fully paid up member of the body and am therefore not allowed to mention it in any way. Could it be something like this?

Thistledew · 01/04/2018 11:18

The qualification would have to be current. They have also only been in the role a short time and it is not the entry level qualification that is needed. From the information provided I think it is unlikely that they have it.

Definitely not.

They haven’t claimed to be part of this registry- so really the only thing is if they otherwise appear suitable- email for clarification if the have it, interview them and ask, or discard the application. Not sure why it’s reportable in your mind

BoredOnMatLeave · 01/04/2018 11:29

Isn't it more likely they are lying about the work experience? I wouldn't report. Just don't invite them for an interview

fabulousfrumpyfeet · 01/04/2018 11:34

Can you contact the applicant and ask them to explain? It seems harsh to report if there is any doubt that they lied. I am also qualified in a profession that I'm currently not licensed to practise. I have to be careful how I describe myself and it wouldn't be difficult to make a mistake such as this.

If someone was pretending to be a vet or a doctor, would you report them? It depends on the situation. Flag it to your employer.

retirednow · 01/04/2018 11:36

Have they stated anywhere that they have a professional registration, if not there's nothing to report. You can usually search governing bodies using people's names.

Littlelondoner · 01/04/2018 22:43

Maybe they left it off as they ashumed as they needed it to work in that fieldand they where doing currently. That it was a given they had it?

RB68 · 01/04/2018 22:47

If they will as a result hold someones life in their hands or its to do with the supervision of say vulnerable people - contact them and talk it through asking if they have that qualification. If they still don't and it sounds v dodgy etc I would then report without any qualms
