Breast cancer screening - ultrasound - strange experience

Hi, I recently went for a breast cancer screening appointment. I had a mammogram and the ultrasound. I hv had both procedures earlier a few times.

I expected the mammogram to be painful and it was. However what surprised me that the ultrasound was even more painful than the mammogram. The Radiologist pressed the probe very hard into my breast. I told him that it is very painful and if he could go a little gentler, but he said that he has to press really hard to get a clear picture. I have never been told this during the ultrasounds I have had earlier. From my recollection, only a gentle pressure was applied. The whole experience was quite strange, the way he moved the probe over me felt very harsh and strange. I can not express in words how painful and awkward it was. I almost felt that I was being abused. I do not wish to cast any aspersions but have doubts. I just want to check with others what their experience has been and any professional opinion would be really useful before I decide on the next steps.

I don't know your personal situation, it maybe that the part they needed to examine was deep within your breast?
But I had this done a couple of years ago and the ultrasonographer was very nice and it didn't hurt at all, just gentle/firm pressure, but not painful

Sorry you've had this experience, you really don't need it on top of worry you already have 💐

They discovered my breast cancer via a painful ultrasound. I am glad they insisted, because I had a false negative mamogramme.

Ultrasound can be very painful, pressing on hard with the probe compresses the tissue and gives a better view of the area - particular in high fat areas (breast, stomach etc)
It’s quite normal

Yes, the ultrasound I had for a lump in my breast tissue just near my armpit was quite painful.

Mammogram was fine.

Female breast specialist did the ultrasound, if it's relevant.

Thanks for all messages and sharing yr experiences. This has been useful and clarified things for me. It's a shame that NHS hospitals in our area do not have any female consultants for breast cancer and I have always had a male radiologist . Just waiting for the results now.
