How do I cope financially?

So my husband left the family home yesterday after I found out he had been secretly wasting money again. I have another thread on this matter but not sure how to add it to this one. I'm hoping it's not long term but he's has to get professional help before I can even consider allowing him home again. He has found a flat nearby to rent.

I have only worked part time (16 hours) since having my second child. I literally have no idea how I'm going to cope money wise. A friend said I should be able to claim universal credit but I don't even know where to start, the process etc.

Is there anyone who can shed some light on where I stand?

Benefits calculator site. And the Citizens Advice will talk you through the process. And your DH will have to pay maintenance for your DCs - this doesn't all fall to you. I'm sorry you're going through this.

@Hassled sorry I did forgot to mention of course he would be paying maintenance. I will have a look at the calculator now. Thank you

I asked my ex to leave after finding out we were in tens of thousands of pounds of debt. I had no job and £200 in the bank. I'm four years down the line and things are hugely improved for me financially but I did have to get a full time job and an au pair to help with childcare as I couldn't do it otherwise. I got working families' tax credits early days although that may now be the universal tax credit. I applied online and filled it out ASAP. I'm now renting a big house, have no debt and manage each month... just. But I've never been happier

@surlycurly Thank you for your comment, I have spoken to my employer and thankfully can get back into work full time as of 5th February. My area is a universal credit area. Just had a panic after hearing all these awful stories in the press. I'm feeling a lot better today about everything

Glad to hear it! Go forth and be the master of your own destiny (it's rather nice). X

Hey you can start your universal credit claim online(quicker you start, quicker you get sorted :)) it's basic questions,a lot of them, but still not too difficult. Plus your entitled to a budgeting advance, while your waiting for your claim to get sorted.I'm glad your feeling better today :)x
