Should I report my supervisor?

Morning all. I'm not really sure what to do so I would value some opinions.
My supervisor had surgery 2 weeks ago, he doesn't want to take time off work and receive sick pay as he says he can't afford to. So he is coming into work, clocking in then going to the staff room to sleep for the entire shift (6 hours). I wouldn't care if his work didn't affect me but it does, and it's a physical job. It doesn't seem fair that he is being paid to sleep and I have to pick up his slack, when there should be someone to cover his work, it's leaving me exhausted. I want to report him but then I feel he must be having a hard time to be doing this.. WWYD?

What would happen if you didn't pick up the slack?

holyshitdude · 28/12/2017 06:52

I don't know. I haven't been working there long and I haven't even met the manager yet.

Unless they were going to pay me to sleep too then I’d report them I think! It’s just taking the piss and shouldn’t be up to you to pick up the slack

Vitalogy · 28/12/2017 06:59

What extra work are you having to do? Can you just do your work only?

BattleCunt · 28/12/2017 07:01

Fuck yes report them Jesus! That's taking the absolute piss.

holyshitdude · 28/12/2017 07:02

We work together, so the work that's not finished makes it look like someone has been slacking but impossible to prove who, if that makes any sense.

Ok right. So if work isn't done/completed then the supervisor will have to answer for it. It's difficult to give an answer not knowing the complete picture but if it wasn't causing me or other's extra work I wouldn't report.

EmilyfromLondon · 28/12/2017 23:39

But if he was off sick you'd have to pick up the slack anyway? So what's the difference?

Lashalicious · 28/12/2017 23:45

No, I wouldn’t report. He may be going through a rough time financially on top of the surgery. I wouldn’t add to his troubles, no way.

yorkshireyummymummy · 28/12/2017 23:53

I would report but in a subtle way. Well, subtle ish. Something along the lines of “ Im really worried about Mr Supervisor. He keeps falling asleep in the staff room and I don’t think he has recovered from his operation, what do I do about the work that I simply can’t finish on my own”

It’s really really unfair for you to have to do two persons work and really unfair of your supervisor to expect you to cover like this for him. I very much doubt he would do this for you. There may be other implications too- are you insured to work alone? What if you hurt yourself doing two peoples work? Can you afford to go on the sick ??
Please, report this as if you get discovered Rather than report you may find that YOU get the sack.

EmilyfromLondon · 28/12/2017 23:57

If you report him, your card will be marked, and if you ever need a bit of slack in the future you won't get it. If you're new in your workplace, this might be normal accepted practice there

Rainbowmother · 29/12/2017 00:00

Collect your evidence quietly before reporting

LemonysSnicket · 29/12/2017 01:22

I wouldn’t report ... why is his sick pay not sufficient to cover his expenses etc?

Mxyzptlk · 29/12/2017 01:30

If it was me I'd ask him to at least help me a bit. Whether he did or not, I'd work to a reasonable standard but not totally knock myself out.
If it's spotted that someone's slacking, it shouldn't be hard for the manager to find out who it is.

Vitalogy · 29/12/2017 05:41

The OP has no need to report anything, they just need to do their own job and no more. Then if the Managers on the ball it'll be found out that way, if not then so be it.

I once worked in a job where we did not get paid when ill. We were very much a team and supported each other. When we were ill, we would go to work, wait until the days staff were out of the way, then the ill one would settle somewhere quiet to sleep for most of the shift, while the others covered for them.

I remember one occasion when I had a migraine and slept most of the shift. I was so grateful I did not have to lose my much needed wages. It worked out pretty evenly though, as were generally a healthy bunch! Just the odd night here or there. To be honest, they would not have covered the ill person anyway, even if they had phoned in sick, so more to gain than to lose by helping each other out. Oh and all the work got done, somehow!

It does not sound like this where you work though, it is unlikely you could ever be 'paid back' rather this person is being a total CF!
