Joint birthday parties and presents etiquette

DS was invited to a b-day party recently by another child in his class he likes/plays with. Said yes. A few days later we were told it was now a joint party for whole class with another member of their class - this second birthday child is not friends with my DS and had originally not invited DS to their birthday party (we knew and had no problem with that as the parents had always been a bit cold with us too). So am I expected to now buy a gift for child number 2?

I'd take a gift for the friend of your dc and a token gift for the other child like a tube of sweets or similar

I’d get a gift for both children.

But a token gift for child number 2.

When my DD went to a joint party, they invited the whole class but each child took on half...and the invitation stated clearly "Please buy a gift only for the child who invited you"

The invitations were arbitrary...they just cut the register in half basically!
