WWYD if you saw a drunk parent in the park

In sole charge of a young boy? Boy of about 3-4, well dressed and suitably clothed for the weather. Not being hurt but parent obviously very drunk and did a couple of odd things like holding a toy guy to his head/ cuddling him really tightly. Other parents noticed and we're commenting, no one did anything that I saw.
It's really stumped me as I didn't feel I could dial 999 as no one was in immediate danger. So, what would you do?

I think if the parent isn't capable of looking after the child, you should call the non-emergency number and ask them what to do. That parent will presumably be walking the child home - imagine crossing the road with a little child when you're pissed?

101? Thanks. I ended up asking if he needed any help but he said no Confused

Not being funny, but how do you know they were drunk?

I ask because a diabetic in crisis can appear drunk.

Equally could they not have just been messing about?

Who did you ask? The boy or the parent?

If someone in sole charge of a child was completely incapable of looking after the child (for any reason) I would call 101.

wheresthel1ght - good point. At first I wondered if the parent had some kind of muscle/ arthritic problem as he wasn't walking properly and stumbling. But the more I watched it became obvious that he was very drunk, when I spoke to him he stank of alcohol.
WyfeOfBathe - I asked the parent if he needed any help. At the time I couldn't think of what else to do and it didn't feel right just walking away. I hoped that perhaps he would call someone... next time I will definitely call 101. I feel so sorry for the child and wish I had.

Call 101 it's also an offence to be drunk in charge of a child under 7.

I saw a man in a very altered state in Lidl with a 2/3 year old a year ago. I spoke to him for a while and asked if he needed help, he didn't so I spoke to the manager and he spoke to the man with me. Man then agreed to call his mother and sat down and had a drink of water and we all chatted pleasantly till grandma arrived and took the child home. It's hard to know what to do. I would speak to them and assess the situation and what needs to be done.

I know of someone who is an alcoholic who collected his son from nursery whilst under the influence (the staff didn't notice Shock) and collapsed whilst in a field with his 3 year old with him.
Passers by stepped in and looked after the child and called for assistance, but my blood runs cold when I think of what could have happened if the child had run off. I'd ring 101 as it might be that others have had similar concerns or it might not be the first time that this has happened and they could be aware of who this is Sad
