Depends what you're moving from I suppose! It wouldn't be my first choice but some parts (streets) of it are better than others. Does it have to be Grangetown?

SandBlue · 25/09/2017 16:21

There are less pleasent parts to 'boro.
There are also nicer bits.
What has made you select Grangetown?

JamesBlonde1 · 25/09/2017 16:24

Sorry to anyone who lives there, but it does have a bad reputation. Lots on social problems.

It was thriving historically as much of the estate was built to house workers of local industry and those jobs have reduced significantly. Very high unemployment.

MinnowAndTheBear · 25/09/2017 16:26

Eston might be nicer. What makes you choose Grangetown?

LuluJakey1 · 25/09/2017 16:34

It is deprived and run down. Not pleasant.

QforCucumber · 25/09/2017 16:37

I live in Middlesbrough. I wouldn't live in Grangetown.

QforCucumber · 25/09/2017 16:38

What are your reasons for moving?

Ashydee · 25/09/2017 18:16

Houses here are tiny run down and way too expensive schools are awful !! But on the up have everything within walking distance .. no don't have to be grangetown just a lot of nice houses to rent and good prices but sounds like there is a reason for why there is so many !

Possumfish · 25/09/2017 18:21

Don't do it. One of the worst areas round boro. Look at eston. Or maybe even Redcar just down the road!

QforCucumber · 25/09/2017 18:22

A little further out, Normanby, Eston, redcar, marton - all much more desirable. Schools in the Grangetown/South bank area aren't sought after, nor are the houses. There's are better parts of a bad bunch if you get me Smile

SoPassRemarkable · 25/09/2017 18:37

It's a long time since I lived in Middlesbrough but 20 years ago it was rough.

PotteringAlong · 25/09/2017 18:50

Does it have to be Middlesbrough?

Ashydee · 25/09/2017 19:03

Thank your all so much don't think I will be moving here estate agents told me to check it out 1st now I know why lol .. anywhere in Yorkshire barring Bradford.. any suggestions?

I've lived in Middlesbrough for 23 years and wouldn't live in Grangetown. If your budget allows I would look at some parts of Eston, Marton, Coulby Newham, some parts of Redcar. If you say what you need (near shops etc if no car) and budget I could link some examples from rightmove.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 25/09/2017 19:06

I spent some years of my childhood in Grangetown, it was very rough but I have to say people were friendly. Not sure what's like now as I haven't lived there in 15 years but some of my best memories in a shitty childhood was when I lived in Grangetown - there was no busy roads going through the estate and so as kids we used play out.

If you're looking for somewhere a bit more respectable then Normanby used to be considered a bit posh. As a kid I used to think Whale Hill used to be a lot more calm and less rough.

HattiesBackpack · 25/09/2017 19:12

There are some lovely places for families in West Yorkshire, check out Hebden Bridge see if that kind of place (rural town) would suit you.

PotteringAlong · 26/09/2017 08:16

If it doesn't have to be Middlesbrough then I'd look further north into County Durham.

Scumboro · 03/10/2019 18:41

Grangetown is a dump still living there and can’t wait to get out the newsagents (McColls) sells drugs behind the counter

LemonMousse · 03/10/2019 19:58

Would you consider County Durham or do you need to be further south?
Some great towns and villages - reasonable house prices or rents.

Mab2020 · 05/04/2020 09:45

Does anyone know what cresswell road is like in grangetown is it one of the better roads?

Thatnameistaken · 05/04/2020 12:46

West Durham has a lot of cheap properties in small ex mining communities. Semi rural or more urban. Lovely part of the country and handy for trips back to Scotland.
