Teenage driver - cancelled insurance

My son has had his insurance cancelled for speeding with a black box. Not ridiculous speeding but too many times just over.

I know he's been stupid and so does he but has this happened to anyone else? Any idea when he can get insurance again? He's 18.

There will be some insurers out there who are willing to provide insurance. He has to answer honestly to the question about having insurance cancelled though. It will be extremely expensive. Does he have to drive? Maybe have a break from driving until he is more mature and lowered premiums.

Clearly it is ridiculous speeding- as in consistent and he hasn't learnt from his mistakes.
I doubt any insurer will touch him for a while, sorry.

countrylife1980 · 22/08/2017 15:36

I wouldn't let him. Speeding kills. Especially as he's clearly done it many times.

Helenluvsrob · 22/08/2017 15:37

He'll have to use the bus then wont he? He knew he had the black box and chose to speed " too many times just over" .

I know that's harsh, but this is exactly why black boxes exist. THis is high risk driving for a new driver and why teenagers are at risk both of cost insurance companies £££ but more at risk of seriously injuring themselves and passengers.

I suspect with the history of the cancelled insurance, which you will have to declare , noone will insure him for some time,

Maybe talk to someone rather than go on line and then you can find out from a broker when you might be able to e insure him and how much it'll cost. Good luck :)

I've heard this before with black boxes. Even 1mph over the limit flags up.
Perhaps try a broker?

I think he needs to be looking at getting a bike. sorry, but an 18 year old who speeds repeatedly knowing the consequences is not safe on the road. Maybe riding a bike and experiencing bad driving at the sharp end will improve his attitude.

You might get some idea of what to do from this op.

I'm looking for helpful advice - thanks to those of you who have provided it. The rest of you - it must be great to be perfect.

There used to be something called 'pass plus' which was an optional additional test which some insurers will use to reduce the premiums. If it is still around it may help.
