Broken tooth please help

I have just had root canal treatment on a lower molar, finished Monday.
I was referred as it was complicated and paid privately, I am normally an NHS patient.
The dentist mentioned there were several tiny cracks in the tooth due to me grinding my teeth and advised a crown at my own surgery. I booked the crown appointment immediately but my appointment isn't for another two weeks. I have a temp filling in place.
Tonight a huge chunk of the inside of the tooth has sheared off while I was eating (v soft food, chewing on other side). I am panicking and don't know what to do. I have tried the NHS line but they won't see me as they have no appointments. I have tried my dentist emergency number but there is no answer.
Will it have to be extracted?? I could cry, I'm so nervous of the dentist and I've sat through hours of horrible painful treatment seemingly for nothing, I would really appreciate some advice please.

It's ok, don't panic.

I had a RC while pregnant, and the dentist wouldn't do the amalgam filling until after the baby was born. Unfortunately that left the tooth very weak, and it shattered before the filling was done.

The dentist tried to make me a crown, but the peg in my RC was too short to attach the crown and it kept falling off. Which left me with several options:

  1. try replacing the RC with a lovely beer one that would take a crown. Risk of utterly destroying the remains of the root, leading to extraction. Nope, did not like that idea.

  2. make a bridge. That would require crowning the teeth on either side. Nope, did not like the idea of crowning perfectly healthy teeth.

  3. do nothing. Seal the tip but leave the root there, as it was, until I was ready do do something about it.

I chose (3). Thought I might get an implant one day. Leaving the root in place preserves bone density in the jaw and keeps the remaining teeth in their place, too.

Hope this reassures you. Smile

BTW I have since had a crown on one of the teeth next to the gap, and it's really not a big deal. Taking the impression of your teeth is weird, but not too bad, and IMO is the worst bit. You don't need to have a whole tooth to get it crowned.

Thank you for replying, that does make me feel a bit better.
The dentist who did the root canal gave me his mobile number. I texted him just before I posted and he called me with advice which was lovely of him. Unfortunately he didn't seem very optimistic about the chances of saving my tooth as the broken area extends below the gum line.

I'm not a dentist, so I don't know the ins and outs, but preserving the root seemed to be important, unless I was going to have an implant in the very near future.

I have nothing visible above the gum line. I can feel the edge of the remains of the tooth with my tongue. It's not hugely attractive, having a gap, but it's a molar and not particularly visible. Beyond occasionally getting a bit of food stuck there, it really does not affect me at all.

I've always intended to get an implant, but the truth is I'm (probably) rather like you, and can think of a bazillion other things I'd rather do!
