would you go for this job?

I have been in my job for a few years and feel it is time for a change. Since returning from my last maternity leave I feel bored and frustrated. In my absence the more interesting aspects of my role have been taken away, leaving me doing basic tasks which I find very straightforward.

On the plus side, I am paid relatively well (for what I do), I get extra annual leave due to long service with my employer, and I can work flexible hours. My boss is nice. This will all be very important in the coming year, as my DC1 starts reception in September.

Meanwhile I have seen a job advertised which would be a step up. It's in a similar organisation to where I currently work, but a grade higher. It would be a more challenging role and in an area which interests me more (and it is more closely linked to the area I studied so may have potential for future progression). It is also 30 hours a week, the same as my current job - these jobs are quite few and far between.

However, on the down side the new job would be slightly further from home/school (although if I take the bus it would take a similar time as my current walk to work). It also has less annual leave, which is a bigger issue. Also, the pay would only be very slighly higher as I am at the top of my current grade (although my pay would go up each year whereas if I remain in my current job it will stay the same). The initial payrise would be wiped out if I have to pay bus fares.

If I was offered the job, I would attempt to negotiate flexible hours to allow me to do the school pickup on one of my working days, which is my plan in my current job. If they said no, this would probably be a deal breaker.

Thank you for reading and (if if anyone has read this far), would you go for the job?

Yes, I would go for it! I always think it's best to leave a job before you start to hate it 😀
As you say, you can always negotiate, and anyone who is good at what they do will be popular to an employer

If you're already bored then it's likely to be a downhill slide going forward.
Changing jobs sounds like it has some challenges, but you've identified them and have a plan.
I'd go for it.

Definitely go for it! Being stuck in a job you are bored with is soul destroying.

Oh, thanks for the replies! And the positivity.

Yes I am quite bored where I am and it is getting me down. Even though I know the practical benefits of staying where I am, it doesn't stop me feeling miserable about it.

You have nothing to lose by applying - the interview is a two way process - ask about pay rises and progression flexible hours

They may offer more than you think if they know you can do the job straight away

You won't know unless you apply

BrawneLamia · 10/08/2017 10:30

That's true, greentulips

Is it OK to ask about flexible hours at the interview, do you think? I wasn't sure if that was something to be negotiated if and when they offered the job

Wait till you're offered the job before negotiating, play your cards close to your chest. I'd also be negotiating that salary!

Look at the long term, not the here and now. It's worth moving even if you keep the financial status quo in the short term, or are even a little worse off, if you can afford it, for the longer term gain. Your DCs will be little for a very short time in the scheme of things, and you'll need a career where you can progress as they start to need you less.
