If your child won an athletic medal they shouldn't have won?

My 8yo daughter went to her first athletics meeting today. She got a well deserved silver medal in the triple jump.

Just as we were getting ready to go she got called up to receive a silver medal in the 50m sprint. She was very excited but she didn't come 2nd. In fact she didn't even place in the top 3. I went to the man calling out the winners and told him that she didn't come 2nd. He said that if it was on the winners sheets it is what had happened.

I have come home and have been sat thinking about it and the poor kid who hasn't got a medal. I am wondering if he was thinking I was saying that she deserved gold instead of silver but she didn't deserve any.

Wwyd now? Do I just leave it or do I see them again at training tomorrow?

maybe the others were disqualified.

I'd get your athletics club to raise it with the organisers

The organisers were the athletic club. There was 20 girls started then 5 got through to the finals. She came either 4th or 5th (It was a photo finish for 4th and 5th). I did commiserate with her at the end of the race but told her she did well.
As far as I know non were disqualified. Should I message the club and explain in more details?

Surely the parents of whoever should have got the medal will have bought this up. If nothing has been done to rectify it then I would assume for some reason the other participants have been disqualified .

OlennasWimple · 09/07/2017 15:33

Will you get the results through officially in some way? Our athletics club used to pin them up on the wall, detailing times / distances, Personal Bests, Club Records etc, as well as who came 1/2/3

You could always just say that you were both surprised that DD won a silver medal, as you thought that she had come fourth or fifth

Maybe the organisers or whoever called the race got the names mixed up when they wrote it down on the sheet?

I would follow this up, as for me personally, getting an award in these circumstances would be utterly meaningless. Obviously if the second and third place getters were actually disqualified that's a different story, but otherwise I'd really want to get to the bottom of the matter.

I find it odd that the real second place getter (or their parents) didn't create a fuss. I know I would have if my child's place/medal had been given to someone else.
