Intruder in the house this morning

I feel ridiculous writing this because if it was anyone else I'd be saying phone the police!

Here's what happened.....my partner had left to take dd to school. He's been away and this was the first day in a long time that I didn't take her. I am out 7:45-8:15am guaranteed, every day. We live in a bungalow and I was in the room furthest from the front door. Around 8am my dogs started going crazy, not excited barking but real, threatening growls. There's some left over chicken on the side so I assumed they were growling at the cats as they normally do if they think they're going to steal food. It went on for a minute or so and then I very distinctly heard someone say "Shhh". At that point, I leapt up, petrified. I didn't know whether to stay put, jump out of the window in the room or try and dash to the next room where there are patio doors. I just froze. I opened the window to get out but it was too difficult, I mainly just stood stock still on the spot. I heard further footsteps in the corridor but nothing other else. I tried to phone my DP but he'd left his phone at home. He got back around 5 mins after that and has been sweet and slightly concerned but basically wasn't worried and just said to lock all of the doors. There are four separate doors to the outside. I've only just stopped trembling! I can't remember the last time I was so scared. The thing that's bothering me the most is the timing. They came when they thought they knew that the house was empty. The dogs clearly didn't know them. Nothing has been taken or re-arranged as far as I can tell. If it wasn't for the dogs I'd almost swear I'd hallucinated the whole thing.

It seems a bit overkill to call the police (non-emergency number). I thought about calling them when I was trapped in the room but the danger seemed too immediate, I didn't think I had the time. And I knew DP would be back any minute.

So, lovely mumsnetters, WWYD??

Definitely call 101 to report it, and possibly get a CCTV system set up on your property.

Oh, and give your dogs a treat. We had a 'strange' man walk into our back garden once. Not strange to me as he is a colleague of my husband who I've known for years and was dropping something off for him but the dog had never seen him before. First I knew that he was there was when I walked into the kitchen and saw my dog out on the lawn, flat on his back having his tummy tickled by this stranger (to him).

I'm being more aware of keeping the back door locked though as we live on a quite cul de sac and in fact one of our neighbours was recently broken into over night and had their car stolen.

Hope the police were helpful and you are less shaken now OP

OP I can only but imagine how scared you were. How worrying, and scary. It's easy to say you'd react a certain way, but until it happens you really have no idea.
Hope you're feeling better today, and less shaken up? How did the call to 101 go? Getting one of those front door cameras may be a good idea. Or you can buy cameras that dogs wear?
My worry would be that as you are usually out of the house at that time, that this could have happened more than this one occasion? Not said to worry you further, but it was one of my first thoughts reading the thread. You do need to be more cautious about locking doors/windows when you not close by, especially if your home is big (like it sounds), but I'm sure you already know this.
Again.. I hope you're ok Flowers

Mmmmmm......have you checked your attic/loft/basement/outhouse etc to make sure nobody is squatting there?
It happened to a MNetter not that long ago and he was using the attic space

If you are normally out of the house at that time - maybe your dh is having an affair and his fancy piece let herself in before realising the house wasn't empty?

i know how scary it feels, an ex-bf did this once not knowing i had taken the day off sick - he was pretending he had a job when actually he just walked around until i had left for work.

Have you changed the locks since you moved in?

CrabPots · 21/07/2017 02:00
