How do I complain about this little gem?

Not sure how to write this, don't want to give you TMI but don't want to be guilty of drip feeding either.

On the first few days of my period I use tampons, then towels for the last few days. Recently my local supermarket's own brand were on special offer so I thought I tried them. Wasn't too keen on them for various reasons, so decided when I'd used them all up I wouldn't buy them again.

Yesterday one of the applicators got stuck inside me, and I couldn't get it out for love nor money. Believe me I tried because the last thing I wanted was to go and see a doctor. Nothing would shift it so I ended going to a walk in centre - the doctor there didn't do internal examinations so they sent me to the local hospital's walk in clinic. Lovely nurse there tried twice but couldn't get it out either as it was right up against my cervix so she sent me to the other local hospital's A&E straightaway. After spending most of the day seeing various doctors and having the equivalent of 4 smears in 6 hours and losing all my shame having to tell about 7 different health professionals (reception/triage/nurses/doctors) a very nice doctor finally got the thing out. I am now walking like John Wayne and would kill for a rubber ring to sit down on, but I'm sure I'll live and am very grateful for the NHS and that I'm no longer at risk from TSS.

My family have told me I really should complain to the local supermarket because having poor quality tampons is dangerous. If it had been a one off I wouldn't be thinking I should let them know, but they weren't the best quality ones (I suppose it could have been a dodgy batch). It's just that many moons ago I worked as a customer services manager and I can't bear the thought of making a complaint and whoever reads it laughing with everyone else there about the silly cow who got a tampon applicator shoved so far up her that it reached the cervix and had to be taken out in A&E.

Would be grateful for any advice - on if you think it's worth complaining about from a safety point of view or if I was just unlucky and it's not worth letting local supermarket know. I suppose I could call them and not leave my name or contact details but if I did, I'd want them to follow it up and let me know what they're going to do.

I honestly thought I had no shame left after I'd given birth but I was wrong. Yesterday is a day I never want to repeat! Will be using towels from now on!

Poor you! I'd definitely complain if it was me x

PenelopeParmesan · 01/05/2017 09:43

There will almost certainly be a customer care phone number on the tampon box, I'm not sure I'd want to discuss my fanjo at the customer service desk either

Oh what a nightmare for you :(

Yes, embarrassing as it is I'd complain - what if it happened to someone who'd only just started their periods and she didn't know what to do? Their products sound unsafe, they need to know

Oh, I'd complain in writing though, I wouldn't go into the store!

I wouldn't complain to the local shop, id write a letter to h/o customer services. I've been a retail manager for years so not oblivious to how it's likely to be handled. If you contact h/o there'll be a log of any similar complaints and they'll be able to see if it's likely to be a one off or a design issue. Speaking to the local store will probably just mean you're offered a refund.

Hope you're feelings no better today Flowers

From experience of working in a supermarket - that would get talked about for ages. Seriously - somebody once brought back deodorant saying it doesn't spray.. the can was empty! That was laughed about because she'd obviously used it as the receipt was just in the return guarantee.

But I would complain to the maker of the tampon.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 01/05/2017 09:46

Sorry I meant feeling better, don't not know where the no came from Blush

MarklahMarklah · 01/05/2017 09:58

Don't go instore - contact them via the details on the packaging. I completely get that this was embarrassing and horrible and you don't want to be having that discussion at customer services, but, the product is dangerous and they need to know.
Hope you feel better today. If you have any tea tree oil, then a few drops (3 to 4) in a sinkful of warm water and a good splash over the, er, affected area may help soothe things.

HoldBackTheRain · 01/05/2017 10:02

Thank you all, I will write or email said supermarket's HO. Wasn't sure if I was making a fuss over nothing but agree that I should let them know their tampons are a bit crap.

Am very sore today but feel so sorry for all those yesterday who had to poke around up there yesterday trying to get the bastard thing out Blush I wonder if they went home to their beloveds yesterday and told them my story around the tea table? God the shame. And to make matters worse the doc that finally got it out after much poking and prodding said half way through 'your vagina walls bulge inwards so it's very hard to see all the way up there' - if someone had offered to shoot me there and then I would have taken them up on the offer. I'm so glad this forum is anonymous because I just can't share this with anyone IRL apart from my nearest and dearest that were with my yesterday! My and my bulging vagina walls are going to take it easy today and email HO Smile
