Ran over a bike.

I ran over a child's bike- unattended in front on my car on my drive. I could find owner so left it on the side of the road. Went to get my car fixed as it had pulled a bit of the underneath off. And went to work late.

Now I have a note through my door asking what I am going to do to resolve this before she calls the police.

Wwyd?

Does the cctv show the child leaving the bike?

Are people suggesting that the neighbour's child was made to cry in front of the op's husband as part of this scam? Whole thing sounds very unlikely

Did you really have cctv and did it show a child leaving the bike? People do involve children in scams, sadly, and even teach them to steal for the parents. The failure to produce a receipt for the bike would also make me suspicious.

I have been surprised by people saying how often this happens. We did have a bike left on a drive once but it was a long enough drive that it wasnt under the car and as we approached the car from the side clearly visible. The police said the bike had probably been stolen and abandoned and I'd wonder if this was a way of trading a new but stolen bike for cash. We had to store the bike for a time in case someone came to claim it then I think we took it to the dump. I'd certainly be reporting the outcome to the police and insurer in case this family do the same again.

I hope all readers will now check their car before driving off if the front of the car is so close to a pavement.

Sounds scammy to me. How come the child was tearful but presumably wasn't sent back out to retrieve the bike when he went home without it. And if the child is old enough to be out unsupervised, presumably they have enough wit to know that placing a bike under a car isn't the best of ideas...

Glad it's over and done with OP.

Frogqueen13 · 07/01/2017 07:03

Yes we did have cctv it looks like the child throws it down and runs down the street

The child looked like it had been very told off hence the tears- but I could have been a scam.

I'm just glad it's over thank you for all your help x

Can't believe you paid her £40. You're £90 out of pocket for someone else's stupidity. I would have been wanting £50 from her!

alreadytaken · 08/01/2017 00:02

why would a child just throw down a new bike and run off? I know people have mentioned falling off but it just doesnt make any sense.

DearMrDilkington · 08/01/2017 19:25

Sounds like a really weird scam tbh. A child doesn't leave a bike somewhere and then walk a few streets home.

You shouldn't have given her any money!! I'd have been asking her for money for the damage it did to your car! Glad it's solved now but if anything like this happens again - stand your ground!
