WWYD about moving?

We really want to return to the area I grew up in which would involve a complete change of everything. Job, house, school, the lot. It would mean moving over 100 miles from where we currently live. We have been here since before our children were born and have lived in the same house the whole time.

DH has been searching and applying for jobs for over 6 months but in that time he has had no luck except one slight, possible, positive on the horizon which I have pushed to the back of my mind because I am not feeling very optimistic about it ever happening. I have begun to wonder if I am just going to shrivel up in this place that we have come to tolerate.

We need to make the move in the next 6 months or wait another two years after that because DD will be starting her GCSE years and we don't want to disrupt that time.

We are in a position that if we were to sell our house then we would have a reasonable(ish) amount of money from the sale. That makes it tempting to sell and move to a rented place then worry about the job after. The thing is though, I don't have any idea what would be a decent enough amount of money to do that with.

So, how much money would you want to know you had if you were to think of doing similar? Is it a crazy idea no matter what? Or is there an amount of money that would be enough for it not to be the craziest, most insane idea in the world?

I wouldn't move without at least one of us having a job to go to but we're both very risk averse.

How long will your potential profit last you in rent? What happens if you end up with no deposit towards the new house? How expensive are rents compared to likely salaries if you need to start saving again for a deposit?

And also, what's the job market like whet you're wanting to move to? Being totally realistic, is your dh likely to find a new job soon or could you go back to work while he does childcare if there's nothing?

It could possibly last us 5 years covering everything as long as there are not huge problems that come up, but I we are also very risk averse so it is one of those things that we would never actually do. I have just been wondering if I am too risk averse and if we should actually consider it.

All the questions you give to consider are ones that I have on the mental list entitled "Don't be such a wally, put that idea out of your head NOW!"

Wow, five years gives him a long time to find something. I'm guessing you're moving from London to somewhere cheap . Smile

It's supposedly easier to find a job if you've already got one but if you've got such a big cushion I'd probably just go for it.

Is he in the sort of industry where he (or you) could freelance?

sillyideas · 13/12/2016 23:12

Unfortunately not re. the freelance. Sorry for vague answers, I have namechanged for this one.

I have started to wonder if the fact he is applying from so far away is putting potential employers off, though the reasons for this are addressed in cover letters.
