Moving to London?

If you had a job offer near Slough, where would you live to travel in and out within an hour? I need a 2 / 3 bedroom flat / whatever. Realise it may be more likely to be a 2 bed!

Preferably less city-ish with decent schools and not too expensive. Any advice? I am a clueless Scot!

Need more details please.
Buy or rent? Budget? Primary or secondary schools? Driving or train?

You could go in several directions from Slough, not just London. Eg Reading, Windsor, Buckinghamshire.

bittapitta · 04/12/2016 07:17

You wouldn't live in the direction of London, you'd look the other way (confused by your title... Unless you are calling Slough "London"? Which it's not)

Depends how you will commute - car or train. There are some nice bits of Reading, more affordable than the fancier towns in driving distance.

this just exemplifies how clueless I am!
renting, primary schools atm, and potentially car or train. I honestly have no idea!

I'm confused, do you need to live in London for some other reason (partner, family, schools?)

If not I'd live much closer to Slough if I were you. Your money will go much further.

ChippyMinton · 04/12/2016 12:48

Start with where you will be located in Slough and whether you have parking available to you, or a shuttle bus to/from the station, and decide if it's car, train or bus you will use.
If train, look either way along the Great Western train line for places or connections, or there is a train to Windsor.
If driving, again it depends on Slough location. Traffic is awful in the peak hours, and the M4 is unpredictable.

Slough ? London ? Eh ?

If you've got a job in Slough then live in/just outside Slough surely ? The commute London-Slough each day would be a PITA.

SpotTheDuck · 04/12/2016 13:13

It would be insane to live in London and commute to slough, you'd be paying a fortune both in rent and commuting costs for no reason. Slough is definitely not in any sense part of London! It's like getting a job offer in Edinburgh and asking which part of Glasgow you should move to :)

Start simple:

  • does your workplace provide parking, and what is the traffic like at the time you'd be traveling? Is it accessible by public transport? How reliable are the trains/buses and what will they cost? Then decide whether you'll be using car or train.
  • from there you can work out a circumference you could live in (eg if you're using train, and your workplace is ten minutes from the station, then you can live within ten minutes walk of every station that takes 30 mins to get to your work station. Does that make sense? Mark up possible areas on a big ordnance survey map.
  • now look on rightmove, searching for those areas, to see which is in budget. Cross out any you can't afford.
  • then look for schools in the remaining areas, cross out any that only have schools you'd be unhappy with.
  • after that you prob need to visit, have a look around the remaining possible areas, and get a feel for them.
Once you've narrowed it down a bit more, come back and ask for advice but with the right place name in the title!

sorry to have upset so many people! I haven't explained myself well at all. dh would probably be working in London itself, which was affecting my thinking although I realise I didn't explain well.

Never mind. thank u for trying.

Can you drive to your work in slough but DH needs to get into London by train? Which part of London?

The line from slough goes into Paddington, the line from Windsor and Eton riverside goes into Waterloo.

SixthSenseless · 04/12/2016 14:52

No one is upset, just confused and trying to help.

Much clearer now. Though a lot rests on transport routes. We Londoners plan a lot around that, because it makes such a difference to travel time. So it would help if we knew which area of London, roughly, your DH will be working in: City, West End, Canary Wharf, for example.

JennyHolzersGhost · 04/12/2016 16:14

Oh ok. So either you need to be halfway between or - if proximity to the kids' schools is going to be desirable for one or other of you (in case of illness etc if you've not got family or help locally) - then you need to figure out which one will commute and which one will be local for the kids.
