Is a job worth a move to Hull?

I work in a field where the hours are long and the pay is quite low, but the work is fun. To get a foot in the door, I've had to live in many places that haven't been great. But I'm getting to the point where I want to live somewhere fun where I can walk or home without worrying about something horrible happening.

A job recently became available in Hull. I don't know the UK that well, but everything I've found online so far seems to suggest that Hull is one of the worst places to live. It ranks at the bottom of pretty much every quality of life survey I've seen.

Is this true? I definitely do not want to live where crime rates are high and everyone is miserable. Or where there's no one to hang out with and nowhere to go. If anyone knows Hull and could let me know what it's like, I would be very grateful.

We considered Beverley, but I was on mat leave when we moved to chose Hull to make life as simple as possible for OH. I am now working at a college very near Beverley so if OH's contract is extended next year, we'll hopefully buy a place in Beverley.

All of the statistics about Hull are negatively weighted and skewed by the massive housing estate Bransholme. If you take the data for Bransholme away you get a very different picture. Hull is a fantastic place to live, thriving and bustling whilst having really serious heritage. There's a great arts, music and theatre scene (it is City of Culture 2017), beautiful galleries, good restaurants. It's a small city, so walkable with endless miles of countryside all around it. Easy access to the sea and the river. Lots of gorgeous towns and villages all around too.

I studied in hull when I was younger and visit old friends who settled there Quite often . It has its bad bits but I love the place . Everywhere has its rough parts and as others have said places like the villages /towns on the outskirts are lovely and you get a lot for your money too house wise ! The thing is because it's not a massive place when I say you could live in a nice village on the outskirts I'm not talking an hour long commute - you could be in the centre by car in less than 20 minutes ! Also heard about the city of culture stuff to seems to be getting a lot of money put into various things . When I'm there If we go out there are some really cool bars and music venues and seems to be getting revamped all the time !

It's got some nice classical civic architecture.

Thanks very much, everyone. I didn't think anyone had seen my post for the first day it was up and I came back to nearly two pages!

It sounds like everyone is saying the same sort of thing--that it's more promising than I thought. A visit will be rather expensive, but it seems to be worthwhile.

Thanks very much!

I was a student and Hull and loved living there. There was an abundance of good pubs, some lovely restaurants, the old town is lovely and historic and the villages and countryside around it are really nice.

It does have its issues- much like any other place which has suffered a loss of industry and has high unemployment but I always felt completely safe there. Miss the chip spice!

There are lots of lovely villages in East Yorkshire that would be worth looking at - I don't think I'd want to live in Hull itself but then I don't know the suburbs at all.

Best thing about Hull is the Deep aquarium
