DC spending all her time in her room at 10 years old.

My DC is 10 and has recently taken to spending her evenings after school or days we are at home in her room.
She says she does it to get some peace from her younger brother and sister, and that they are annoying. I don't think the younger ones are that bad personally, just normal younger dcs.

She's just got back from a sleepover and went straight to her room and on her iPad.

Is this normal behaviour for her age?
WWYD?

I used to spend loads of time in my room from about that age. I enjoyed spending time with my family and friends but also enjoyed downtime by myself. I used to enjoy reading, writing or just plating.

It's perfectly normal for a 10 year old to want some peace and quiet.

Does she have internet access on her IPad from her bedroom or is she just playing games?

Unsupervised internet access from a bedroom for a 10 year old is a really bad idea.

Perfectly ok and normal to want a bit of time alone but not ok to be on Ipad all the time. Do you set restrictions on gadget use?

If she's just reading, daydreaming, playing then I'd say its fine and a nice way for her to relax.

DubiousCredentials · 30/10/2016 12:14

It wouldn't bother me if my almost ten yr old did this. However there is no way he'd be allowed the iPad up there with him.

Maybe if you remove the iPad you'll see more of her?

Snowflakes1122 · 30/10/2016 12:14

I've made her come in the living room and she is now on the iPad on YouTube with head phones on and iMessaging her friends.

I suppose the preteen transition was inevitable!

My DD is exactly the same.
She just watches make up videos or something innocuous like Zoella.

Snowflakes1122 · 30/10/2016 12:18

Does anyone know if there is a way to restrict what content you are able to view on Apple devices?

I agree with regards to being wary of unsupervised internet access.

Can you restrict certain types of website via your router? We are with Talktalk and can block porn, gambling, social media, file sharing etc from our account. Was the same with plusnet previously so presumably you can with other providers.

Cocochoco · 30/10/2016 16:07

Tell her she can go and chill in her room or she can use the iPad in a communal room for an hour max.

chopchopchop · 30/10/2016 16:07

There are parental controls on Apple computers - DD cannot send an email to someone new without my checking it, for example.

Ipad detals here

You can also set up a restricted account on Youtube - which allows them to see only vetted videos and no comments.

DubiousCredentials · 30/10/2016 16:22

The YouTube restricted mode is a bit hit and miss though. I had to intervene yesterday after I heard dd listening (in restricted mode) and I heard the words "mother fucker" in a song Shock

NightNightBadger19962 · 30/10/2016 16:27

You can restrict certain websites in settings. I would not let the ipad be used in her room, but let her spend time in her room when she wants to.

I did this at 10 too, although this was way before the days of home Internet. I just preferred being in my room with a pile of good books to being around my younger siblings.
