I am ridiculously sad about this. He's another from my youth and he'd reached a good ages but this one has upset me. A friend calls me Ronnie Corbett because of the way I go off on tangents when telling a story especially after a drink which I've always taken as a massive compliment, even though I'm not sure that's how it's meant Grin

Barker wrote a lot of the scripts under a false name, they didn't realise for a while.

I understand why Ronnie Barker did it, but I wouldn't be able to resist telling my comedy partner that he was reciting my material.

I don't think one was "better" than the other. They were partners. It worked better that way. I used to think Eric Morecambe was "the funny one" but with Ernie it was the stuff of magic!

I just wanted to record how sad I am about Ronnie C's passing. It's the end of an era, and although he died 3 days ago I still feel unusually sad for someone I never met. Mind you, I also felt like this when Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops died and Curtis Mayfield, Teddy Pendergrass, Eric Morecambe and others.

I think it's the realisation that what went into the creation of Ronnie C's sense of humour and talent were the unique circumstances of his early life. Those conditions and circumstances wll not come to pass again, because they are from another era.

All the scriptwriters who contributed over the years (apart from the prolific Gerald Wiley!) are all now late 70s and 80s. That type of sense of humour - clever, inoffensive and visual - will never come again, because life and mores are quite different now. For example, Barry Cryer is now 81 and he's someone I very much enjoy watching just talking about all the well-known performers he's written for.

Oh, that's very sad indeed. I liked him very much. How on earth could he be 85? I must be much older than I think I am.

yes Ronnie barker was Gerald Willey.
