If 4 year old asked you this

My 4 year old daughter just brought me her iPad and asked me to type it so she can see pregnant women having babies. I thought weird, but could not think of a reason why I should say No. What would you do

I stuck OBEM on for my kids. Meh.

JasperDamerel · 13/10/2015 19:53

I showed DD loads of YouTube birth videos when I was pregnant.

I would ask why she was interested, and depending on the answer, either talk about it with her or look for some age appropriate material to watch together with her which I would bet first before showing (if you add 'kids' to a google search it should bring up some appropriate sites)

My DD has been fascinated with birth (human and animals) since she was about 4. I let her watch videos with me on YouTube and she watched OBEM with me.

She has always been very mature for her age though.

What about one of those sanitised, uplifting animations where nothing goes wrong?

Coconutmummy · 13/10/2015 19:59

Great suggestions.

I asked why, and opened one on YouTube for her to watch with me.
I am surprised she is interested at all. Glad to see its not highly unusual

My 5yr old saw a bit of OBEM. She doesn't want to have kids now! What about looking up a dog having puppies and saying 'I found this - it's a dog, but it's the same'. Or what about turning the sound off at least for human births, so there's no grunting/screaming etc?

Coconutmummy · 13/10/2015 20:15

I found a pool birth and we watched together, but she soon wanted the little ponies. I worked in a maternity home from age 13 as my mum was a midwife in a developing country. My opinion on birthing is not conventional. I just did not want to project my negative experience. For now, I think I have not failed entirely on this parenting issue

in the run up to DS and DS2, DD (and DS the second time) watched birth videos, we discussed birth as a normal thing, so they weren't scared if they were around when I went into labour. They both know how a baby is born, then a mum delivers the placenta, cord clamped/tied before or after placenta depending on situation and then how baby may want to feed (either way, it's important IMO to educate them on all choices, then non seem unnatural when they are older)

I would find her some, while quickly vetting for major trauma
