Long time lurker seeking advice here. I have been offered a job that I can see myself doing (and hopefully being good at), but I feel like there is something holding me back in formally accepting it. I have a few days to mull it over, so here's the gist of it all:
New job: a more specialist role within my area of work-looking at the career paths of other people I have worked with, this could be a good foot in the door for me. Job would require me working away from home mon-fri (no kids yet so not a huge problem), more money, at interview it was made clear there is scope for rapid progression, nice offices in a big city, team seem friendly. I would commute for several months before DP joined me to look for work, we would then buy a house in new city. Permanent contract.
Old job: live very near to office, money is average, team isn't very driven (think mostly part time workers who are happy not to push things and rock the boat); this is fine quite boring now but SO not me. Flexible hours. It's basically a comfy, middling public sector role. Fixed term contract, have been there a couple of years now and haven't been offered anything permanent despite positive appraisals and a supposed desire to want to keep me.
What do you think? Staying in old job would allow me to pursue a qualification that would be useful if I were stay in the public sector. With the new job, there would be other opportunities but obviously going down a slightly different path.
I think I might be a bit wary of the change from public to commercial, but after having mentioned the job offer to my department head with no offer of a permanent contract (despite my saying it was a factor in considering taking the new role!!) it's pretty clear they're not too bothered about keeping me isn't it? I just don't know what to do! Career progression is really important to me, so I don't know why i'm finding this so hard.
TIA
