Lego tidy solutions

Joanie47 · 03/01/2015 22:41

I have a 7 and 5 year old and both have really gotten into lego these days! This is great for their building skills and cognitive development but Im forever having to pick (and hoover) up teeny tiny pieces of lego. Does anyone have a tidy and store solutions that works?

Thank you

Ikea Trofast!

My DSs have the shallow trays which keeps things reasonably organised. I started them off so that there's one tray for yellow and red bricks, one for black and white, one for brown and green, one for blue and orange and one for grey, there's also one for doors and windows, and one for transport things and others for other things.

Sounds anal, but it means they can find things and more to the point, put it all away again!

Thank you PigeonPie, I will be looking into that! :)

I was thinking of a play mat as my son has all his lego out on the floor?

The DSs also have wooden boards with edges which are supposed to containe it, probably about 3' x 4', but actually the stuff is always spilling off it and even though they are 'supposed' to only have it on the board at night and the rest should be put away, it doesn't happen!

I've given up! We occasionally have a major clear up and the rest of the time, I close my eyes and hope I don't tread on it!

I would suggest the Ikea trays, we keep broken lego in the big red boxes, minifigures in the green trays. It's another story for the built models - here is my advice when it comes to built Lego models

A dust pan and brush, cheap, cheerful and colourful kept especially for lego

another vote for ikea trofast here, I have two units, with mainly the shallow drawers - all same colour, all labelled - and a few deep ones, 19 drawers in all - organised by colour plus one tray for each of manuals, mini figs, wheels, and jewel pieces/lights (along with gear sticks and steering wheels) and one for all the technic odds and ends. Works well and the kids get it.

Took bloody ages to sort but now it's all done is fab. They have a shelf each for made models and mid creation items go on top of the trofast unit (actually two units stacked on top of each other).

The trays are shallow enough that they can get out the colour they need and put in on the floor to build.

I have a large tupperware that all the spilt bits over the week go into and we re sort it at the end of the week

Yes I'm a bit anal.

Concur with trofast, I've used them for my 3rd and hopefully FINAL solution.

like this

Two trofast, I didn't bracket them together, then double sided tape under the base plates to put on the top. I also put 2 sand coloured ones for beach by the blue. I actually bought a third one and put it on the end with 2 big grey base plates for star wars builds. This one is almost the same width as the other two back to back, it overhangs just slightly.

I bought the little half drawers for minifigures and small parts (wheels, doors etc), then organised the other sets into the bigger drawers, set by set, and labelled. I still need more storage, the DC have LOADS of sets. Will probably have to buy another 2 trofast or just the drawers with the lids and store in cupboard to have everything sorted.

very cool with desk

I always wanted one of these as a kid

my mum used to put a sheet on the floor when we played Lego. When we finished we picked up the corners and poured the bits back into the box. Cheap and effective. and less work than a dustpan &brush
