How to 'properly' eat chips from a bucket or basket....

OK, went to a nice restaurant at weekend. Lots of horsey / country folk. I had steak which came on a board with some chips in a galvanised flower pot type container.

Now, I appreciate that I can eat them however I choose and so just picked them with hand and fork but should I (using correct etiquette) tip some on to the board or am I ok to eat with a fork out of the container?

Thanks :)

I ask for a plate when I get food served like that.

AnnoyingOrange · 02/11/2014 20:38

I was just thinking, send it back and ask for it to be served on a plate Smile

Ask for a plate. Maybe restaurants will stop all the board and bucket wankery if people start asking for plates.

I like sauce with my steak. How can I eat sauce with a steak if it's on a board ? It would drip off the edges

Perfectlypurple · 02/11/2014 20:48

I want chips now.

Ha, I dislike it too but didn't think about sending it back. I happily chomped through the chips (mostly with my fingers as they were thin and crispy fries rather than chunky chips) but it occurred to me that I don't know how I should eat them if it was a proper dinner.

Sorry PP!

AnnoyingOrange - Actually the board had little ridges to keep the butter (that was how it came) on the board. Thinking about it, it came with wedges but I changed it to chips (common, me :))

So, general consensus: 1) ask for plate; 2) OK to eat from pinch container....?

*pinch container? Poncy container.....

At a restaurant I've visited recently I ordered a dish called 'plank steak'. I asked to change the mash to chips instead and was told no as the mash is piped around the edge of the board to stop the peas and sauce all falling off. I ended up sending it back as the mash was stone cold. Ended up telling them to give me a new one. On a plate. With chips. Novelty serving methods need to be at least as effective as a bog standard plate IMO

Housewife2010 · 26/11/2014 14:31

I'd definitely use a fork.

DayLillie · 26/11/2014 14:35

If they serve it up in a poncy container, use whatever method you can manage.

With a plate, knife and fork Grin

I would have said you fork a chip cut it in to bite size pieces and if wanted add bite size steak to the fork and eat and so on.
I've never know any up market restaurants where you use you fingers -
Even getting pancakes (crispy duck) out the round basket things in Chinese you use chop sticks not fingers so I would follow the same rule
