... If you had the chance to pick your career again?

I am in my early twenties with a young baby and a partner who has just finished his degree and got a job in recruitment. I have one year left of my politics degree and then I need to start my career.

I have no idea what to do.

My options:

  • random part time office job so I can look after my little one although I have NO IDEA who would want to employ anyone part time with no experience at graduate level
- but then where on earth is my career going?
  • primary school teaching
- I'd need a pgce right? Haven't researched it but it seems okay. But I wouldn't want to be a primary school teacher my WHOLE career.
  • a masters degree at a top top uni like Cambridge/oxford/lse/somewhere abroad (presuming I have the grades)
- but that costs, and I can't even pick my dissertation topic let alone what to specialise in!
  • a graduate scheme in the foreign office
- competitive but going up in the world. Would eventually mean working abroad. We'd have to live in London at least (with a baby under 2? And low income is that suitable?)
  • a high pace job that is very exciting like my DP but i wouldn't see my little one grow up.

Obviously you can't actually pick for me, but what would you do in my situation? You may have come across a cross roads like this, what did you learn?

I know I have a year. I also have so many other things to do in between now and decoding this but it's on my mind. Just a thought. :)

Conversion degree to law.

Maybe the foreign office. Living in London now with the possibility of living abroad later sounds appealing.

Have you considered journalism? A politics degree might be a good basis.

Urgh - I couldn't stand to read law! Already do international law modules which is quite enough law for me! ;)

I would become a librarian - I don't know if you could do it as a degree when I left school, but my dream career now would be school librarian - I worked in ds1's school library, on a temporary basis, and loved it.

mygreeneyedboy · 27/07/2014 20:03

Farendofafart - It would mean leaving my young one in nursery 5 days a week. Do 18 months old usually get put in nursery for that long?

Not teaching, unless you never want to see your own child's sports day or come in to do reading once in a blue moon.

TBH if I was starting again I would get a trade Grin Train to be a plumber or a gas fitter - self employed - set your own hours- always in demand - no shift work.

Schlooby - hmm interesting the no teaching part. Dm is a teacher and I always remember her at my sports day (but she did take a career break for about ten years at one point...) haha I could NOT be a plumber, I've never changed a light bulb!! But I like the idea of starting a trade. Probably my dream job is to be an estate agent of my own company. And have a guest house in a large house that I built myself. But you need money for that...

Tobeabat - foreign office / civil service is generally what I meant, sorry, so yes I have! :)
