Bill for broken phone WWUD ?

My DS (14) has given me a bill from his friends parents to pay for the phone screen to be replaced £65. My DS admits to accidentally riding his bike over his friends coat which had the phone in the pocket, this made the screen crack( it did already have a small crack in screen).
So WWUD ? Pay up, ignore

Bloody autocorrect

Sounds like it's perfect opportunity to get the already cracked screen fixed.

I would say - sorry but the screen was already cracked so your son should really learn to look after his stuff.

How can you "accidentally ride over" someone's coat? Confused.

Yes, it was daft to leave the phone in the coat pocket on the floor, but that is the lamest excuse I've ever heard!

WowOoo · 05/06/2014 14:05

I'd offer half as the coat was on the floor, but your son did ride over it.

I'd never put my coat on the floor, especially if it had a phone in it. Sounds like both boys need to be taught a lesson here.

How awkward. It does seem like a lot. Can you talk to the parents face to face and come to some understanding and agreement?

My feeling is that if you have expensive and fragile items and leave them on the floor you have only yourself to blame if they get damaged.
Your son shouldn't have ridden over the coat - but riding over a coat once accidentally (or deliberately, come to that) isn't going to hurt it unless you are very unlucky, not your DS's fault the phone was there as well - if I saw a coat lying around I would assume it was just a coat and therefore safe to be at foot level...

I think I'd offer them half of the cost of repair as it's half the friend's fault for leaving it on the ground.

Why was your son so daft as to ride over a coat? Unless it was thrown across his path suddenly.
(okay, I know why, he's a teenager)
I think I would shop around for a cheaper screen. DH just replaced his iPhone4 Screen for only £20.

Phones are expensive bits of kit (when you buy them outright) but sounds like the kid involved didn't look after it as such. If your child had ridden over a phone after it was accidentally dropped on the floor or they were claiming for damage to the coat I may have a little sympathy but I'm sorry the kid needs to take responsibility for his valuables.
This is partially why I'm a bit Hmm about kids with iPhones etc you wouldn't send them to school with valuable jewellery or several hundred quid in cash but we let them go to school they carry something that costs hundreds of pounds (rrp iPhone 4s - £349, iPhone 5c/s - £429-709) and expect kids to look after them!!
