Ever since it arrived at MNHQ we've been poring over the wonderful pictures and recipes in Louise Johncox's The Baker's Daughter. To celebrate publication, we've got fab competition with Pan Macmillian to win £300 of gift certificates for Waitrose Cookery School, enough for two places on a cookery course of your choice.

Simply post a picture below that represents a treasured family food memory - it could be a photo of a battered recipe, the food item itself, or the person it reminds you of, and a couple of sentences telling us about it.

The comp is open until Monday 14 April and we'll announce the winner shortly after on this thread. The publishers will pick their favourite as the winner.

Find out more about The Baker's Daughter and try out some delicious recipes from the book.

I love cooking with my DCs. I never cooked with my mum. We didn't have special meals or prepare food as a family, rather food was just served to us and we were expected to eat it. I hated this. I promised myself I would teach mine how to learn and enjoy the opportunity to spend time together. Here are a few of DD making bread.

I'm a terrible cook - but can make random things like biscuits. The small child and I made these and then he decorated them. I have this pic as my phone screen saver as I love it and makes me think how happy he was decorating them!

Eating together is a real social thing in our family, particularly now our children are grown up and away from home, we love to get together and eat Smile

One of our treats has always been cakes. For many years the DCs birthday cakes were large homemade cakes with chocolate frosting and dishes of sweets which they and their guests would then decorate the cake with (usually while consuming their own bodyweight in chocolate!) Now we are all older and a bit more health conscious I tend to make it with fruit and pretend as it is healthier Grin

I don't have a photograph.
In the mid to late '80's, I used to make the most delicious flan things and send them to work with my now ex and deceased h. He used to share them with his two colleagues and the became known as Growlers and I was often asked when was I sending the next Growler in.

I made the shortest pastry and filled it with bacon bits, fresh, sliced tomatoes and beaten eggs. They were just fab!

These are all lovely especially the baby + watermelon shot. The way babies dive on top of large pieces of food is just wonderful.

This is a recipe my mum found whilst looking through my gran's belongings after she died. It was from her sister Dorothy who was adopted out when young. My gran didn't find her again until they were in their seventies and they only met a few times due to ill health. However, they wrote to each other a great deal and clearly shared their beloved recipes. A love of food runs through our family and it was wonderful to find this - it is now safely within my scrapbook of recipes.....

This is a picture of me on my second birthday eating profiteroles with predictable consequences. Food always evokes really strong childhood memories for me - I remember a holiday by what we ate there!

My memories are birthday parties. This is a photo of me and my brother on my 4th birthday. Mum always put on a great selection of nibbly food and we'd have some friends for tea.

The main feature was always the cake which mum always made herself. She did a great one for me once of a bicycle. It was my 5th birthday and I swear the cake was nearly as big as me. Had mini rolls for handlebars and chocolate fingers for the brake levers. Only problem was they put "magic" candles on which couldn't be blown out. I wasn't in on the joke and cried!

Other cakes included a show jumping ring complete with horses from my Brittens toy farm. My brother once got a cowboy fort with chocolate fingers all round as the wooden planks and cowboy and Native American figures having a fight on top of the cake.

My husband is Scottish but we live in Wales so I make a special effort every year to have a Burns Night Supper. This is a haggis cheesecake that I made this year. New recipe of mine and it went down very well.

Islets, yours is my favourite so far. Very moving Smile

This is my first attempt at cooking a Christmas dinner. My husband had just had major surgery and we were unable to travel home to our families and due to the bad weather they couldn't visit us as planned.
I was completely out of my depth, but I managed it and it was served with real gratitude that we were both together and on the road to recovery :-)

Is it one entry per person? I have so many special food memories! thanks x

HappyMum4 · 01/04/2014 13:31

My happy food memory is when my daughter asked me to make a pony birthday cake, which after I'd picked myself up off the floor and stopped quaking at what I thought would be a Herculean task, I managed to create quite successfully in the end by dissecting two choccy sponges. The icing hid a multitude of sins!!

This was my husband's attempt at our eldest daughter's birthday cake, which considering his previous "creations" of chilli con carne using chilli pickled onions, and ham pasta bake using the Christmas baked ham infused with cloves, no-one expected what he produced!!

My daughter was obsessed with the Little Mermaid so I thought I'd attempt a themed cake for her 3rd birthday. It wasn't the greatest looking cake in the world but she was so happy with it. The fact that the sponge inside was rainbow coloured was an added bonus. It definitely brings back lovely memories.

For his fifth birthday party, my little man decided to have a French theme, and we had the party on Bastille Day. It made me rather nostalgic as that day used to be synonym of huge celebrations as I was growing up in France, to just become a normal working day when I moved to greater London almost thirteen years ago. My baby (I know, he is not a baby, he is five!) made me so proud when he chose that theme. The main reasons he chose it was because he wanted me to make macarons for his birthday, wear a beret and try snails. We took the whole French theme really seriously and off we went on our tricolour adventure, turning the living room into blue, white and red heaven, planning a French buffet, thinking of French activities for the children to do. The macarons were the highlight of the day for my boy and it took me quite a few attempts to get them right. Luckily, the little treats can be frozen so I made them ahead and we ate the failed attempts (wrong colour, wrong shape…) for a whole month before the party. There were sweet and savoury ones (chocolate and foie gras) and the ones in the photo I attached were filled with chocolate ganache, lemon curd and strawberry jam. There was not a single one left! My macarons are in no way perfect, but they taste lovely (to us at least!) and I now make them for each and every family occasion. Mel - I am a new blogger, over at lecoindemel.com/

Lime marmalade reminds me of when we stayed with my GPs when I was little. We never had it at home, but I would have it on my toast at breakfast when we were there. It was my grandpa's marmalade, and he isn't well at the moment, so thank-you for this competition, as it has brought back a lovely memory, even if it probably doesn't sound like anything much to anyone else.

Hi RachelMumsnet, sorry for such a delayed reply! When I try to upload the picture..nothing happens!! Have tried compressing the file but no luck! Will find an alternative pic and hope it works!! :)

This was the only thing my son asked for before going down to theatre for surgery.
He LOVES 'jammy dodgers', and especially these large ones.
I was waiting for him to come round from the anaesthetic when I took both pictures. He has to go through it again this year and I'm sure I'll get the same request! :)

This photo of a family picnic is great nanny in 1958, along with Great grandad (whom none of us ever met sadly), Granny (who was just a young lass then), and Uncle D (also a young lad in those days). This photo speaks volumes to me about what a happy family should be like - the simple joy of a picnic and being together is what family is all about. Whenever we have picnics now, we remember great nanny and try to remember the important things in life: Family, Food, Friendship and Fun!

My 8 year old son LOVES to cook and my happiest family food memories are when he rolls up his sleeves and gets busy cooking in the kitchen - often roping in his brother and sister too! He inspires the whole family to get cooking because he has loved to cook since he was only 2 or 3 years old. He is at his happiest in the kitchen and it makes us happy to see him cooking.

Nothing fazes or daunts him - he will tackle any recipe with confidence and has his own little motto about how its good to experiment in the kitchen because you always learn something new even if things don't go to plan.

He's a really inspiring kid who loves to cook and gives us many family food memories!

My 3 year old daughter's a massive Gruffalo fan & we couldn't find a cake with The Gruffalo on it anywhere which resorted to me making one with my mums help......She absolutely loved it :)
