I'm a newbie so hello... also a silly question

I've just been accepted on to the bloggers network, hello!

My blog is a little naughty so don't look if you don't like naughtiness...

www.meerkatandmamba.com.

I just wondered... how are blog updates submitted to the 'new posts' bit.

Does mumsnet know when a blog has been updated? That seems like witchcraft.

If so is that when bloggers are using actual blogging platforms.
Mine is on my own website, with the latest post always going on the homepage, so my URL is always the same. Does that matter?

Am new to this, up to my eyes in SEO, HTML, TNT, pinging, ponging and lord knows what, my brain keeps frying.

RSS feed. No feed = static site.

Well, that's a gross simplification. :p

Have checked your sitemap, robots file and homepage source code, etc, but cannot find your blog feed.

Are you using a CMS?

Your articles have unique URLs. (I checked.) All blogs have a homepage, which may contain the latest blog articles; the homepage URL does not and should not change.

I'd expect Mumsnet to be picking up blog updates from their feeds. I certainly don't ping them! (Although I do ping the common SEs, when I update my blog.) x

Thanks for replying..

No I'm not using CMS, I opted to build a site on Wix for my blog over a blogging platform, and am already regretting it...

So I have to apply an RSS feed onto my site? A 'feedburning' one, is that right??

Thanks again!!

RSS or Atom would be fine. It just refers to standard formatting of a 'feed' - which, in turn, is just a XML file.

In theory... I guess you could hand code your own XML feed! The main things it should contain are: title, summary (or content), date (published or updated) and link. You might also want stuff like: author, (unique) ID, etc. Plain text only, so remember to strip out any HTML, etc.

CMS = Content Management System. Even if it's bits of paper, do keep track of your blog articles. ;) Also... I hate Wix! :p The URLs aren't very clean and the content is all JavaScript, which sucks for SEO. It's not the end of the world but I'd urge you to consider ditching it in the future. There are better web hosts out there.

A 'feedburning' one, is that right??

Feedburner is a reader for RSS feeds. If you didn't set up the feed, it won't show anything (for your site). A lot of people like it. You could see in it, when you've got account, ... like in twitter - feeds from the sites you subscribed to. And you could see your subscribers.

Thanks to both of you.. however it seems Wix don't allow .xml code onto their sites.

Even their own new shiny blog feature doesn't allow RSS

Aside from making it easy to make things 'look pretty' Wix are in fact utterly useless.

After banging my head against a brick wall and Christmas is out the way I think I'll just switch to Wordpress!

Thanks for your time though, hope you have a great Christmas Xmas Smile

Oh, what a pain. I too can recommend WP. Have found it very easy to use.

Am fascinated by your blog idea and off to have a proper look.

Meerkat10 · 20/12/2013 09:24
