People are so judgmental towards my dog!

My boy is the most kindest sweetest animal I have ever owned. People judge him straight away and move away from him when they see him.

He has to wear a muzzle and be on a lead which does not give him a good impression but its because he is classed as "pitt bull type". He was taken from me at 6 months purely because his breed and then given back to me spaded, tattooed and 1million rules to be aloud to keep him.

What would your opinion be if you saw us in the park?

It's not that silly, you can ask the owner if it's ok to touch the dog.
And if a dog is on it's lead, there's no need to cross the road.
Parents can always teach children a bit of dog common sense, even if they don't have dogs themselves.

OP, the only RL experience of a dog like yours was when DD was in a playground....a couple of teenage girls had a young dog who jumped up a DD, and knocked her to the ground.

My DM demanded the girls (Who were laughing) take the dog out of the children's play area.

DD has since referred to the experience as "when that dog beat me up".

I, as an adult can see it was irresponsible owners rather than the dog, and maybe DD should have been protected more, considering the age of her careers/the dogs careers.

But now DD (and her siblings) have formed an opinion of such dogs.

OP - if your dog had THAT expression on his face I'd probably be in love immediately. I usually smile at dogs and not notice the owners, which is a bit rude of me. Usually the dogs smile back though whereas you don't know with the humans. ;)

lougle · 15/12/2013 19:55

He's a menace, I can tell you. This is him tonight. I worry for DD2 Hmm

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 15/12/2013 19:59

What is that behind him?

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 15/12/2013 20:00

Looks like my Spaniel.

lougle · 15/12/2013 20:01

That's DD2 Grin

Whoops.

As most people wont know you or your dog its not unreasonable that people who dont like dogs might avoid you both. I was bitten as a teenager and cross to the other side of the road with the kids if I see dangerous type breeds. No offence to responsible dog owners but I just dont want to be near pit bulls staffies etc

MrsBennetsEldest · 15/12/2013 20:08

I would avoid but not because of the breed. I have 4 dogs and that in itself can intimidate other dogs so I stay away. If I was with just one of mine I would happily pass by as long as both were on leads and under control.

Hes a lovely dog OP - i don't thnk he looks much like a pitbull -but if he is, where did you get him from? because they have borken the law by breeding him.

I am glad you got your dog back. I think its good that he has been neutered (boys are neutered, girls are speyed) and the tattoo thing is good to just in case you ever loose him, with a dog like that there is always the risk of him being stolen for dog fighting. So do get him microchipped too so that he can be traced back to you should he ever go astray.

As for the 1 million rules - well i think those rules should apply to all dog owners - I assume they cover him having to be under control at all times, etc. Its a shame he has to be muzzled because i had to muzzle one of my dogs when i fist got him and he hated it.

I have had two rotweillers and have expereinced loads of prejudice, i have had people make comments and cross the road to avoid my dogs. It used to make me really sad - although to be fair, they were such magnificent looking animals that the positive comments used to outweigh the negative from idiots and children would love to come and pet our first rottie. I wouldn't allow iwth rottie2 because he was a rescue and although perfectly safe, i could not be sure of his background and how he would react.

I love staffies and staffie type dogs, i wouldn't have one personally because having two JRTs i don't want terrier madness in that size thanks all the same Grin

So whilst i agree that you feel judged and descriminated against, i actually think that tighter rules should be there for all dog owners and breeders.

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 16/12/2013 17:16

oh - i missed the post that said you found him :) did you call him tinker? thats a lovely thing you did, and im glad you are his mum x

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 16/12/2013 17:17

My two have just been playing with a staffie. The three of them got on brilliantly and he was very tolerant of them wanting to bounce all over him.

Amandine29 · 17/12/2013 07:20

IHeardMummy There is a middle ground between avoiding and approaching. There's no need to cross the road but you should just walk past like you would if you saw another human.

My dog in particular is somewhat wary of strangers, especially children, and I don't see why he should have to put up with unwanted attention, just because he looks friendly and playful (which he is). He doesn't like it.

Also common sense suggests that if you know little about dogs you should probably not approach them randomly.

Amandine29 · 17/12/2013 07:23

And when I say he doesn't like it I don't mean that this would translate into aggression. He would usually just put up with the unwanted attention, but sometimes he might cower behind me or try to leave the situation. These are signals that people should pick up on.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 17/12/2013 07:41

I wouldnt think anything of it, ds3 has just started taken a liking to dogs, he calls them all cats though.

If I'm walking along the pavement and we come across a dog I do tend to walk with me in between the dog and ds3 iyswim, but thats because I dont trust him yet not to make a lunge for the dog. It probably makes me look paranoid but its more for the dogs protection than ds3s Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/12/2013 07:48

I think we'd probably avoid as dd1 said to me yesterday "mummy I don't like big dogs". We were walking past a Yorkshire terrier... Xmas Hmm Xmas Grin

saintmerryweather · 17/12/2013 07:48

if i had either of my dogs with me i would cross the road, they like to bark at other dogs before they approach to.play which tends to put other dogs backs up, so i would avoid any dog i dont know. on my own id just walk past you

lougle · 17/12/2013 08:53

To be fair, I would avoid or take a different route if I saw any dog, because my dog is great with people but very afraid of other dogs, having been snarled at once and chased three times. The last time he ended up 'air snapping' at a dog because s/he just wouldn't leave him alone and the owner was useless (dog actually had perfect recall once she bothered to blow the whistle she had dangling out of her mouth Hmm).

So I would give a very wide berth for my dog's sake, which may appear to be a judgement on another dog.
