Why not read my latest blog about portion distortion and why it's helping to make us fat!

I think calling everything "a disorder" is a bit overly dramatic.

nutritioncoach · 22/03/2013 15:01

Hi Trills
I'm not sure where you got 'disorder' from, I've used the word 'distortion' because the portion sizes have been dramatically altered over the years

regards

Susan

Wow - sorry -- something wrong with my eye/brain connection there - I read "disorder"!

Bookmarking

This is something I've been thinking about a lot recently. I've also taken to drinking .5 -1 pint of water before meals and then I automatically feel less hungry

Trills · 22/03/2013 17:01

I think the blog would be more interesting if there was more discussion rather than simply listing foods that are larger now than they used to be.

I don't even remember there being any of this muffin nonsense in the 80s. It was a fairy cake and not sold to you wherever you turned. As teenagers, we were more likely to pop into the local bakery for a cream cake or danish pastry.

Trills · 22/03/2013 17:09

I wonder how a muffin compares to a cream cake.

nutritioncoach · 22/03/2013 17:35

hi Trill
It's a good point about the discussion element of the blog, but you could always post a comment directly on it and see what happens. Plus you've start a discussion here. But I get your point and will think about it for my next post
Thanks

If you divide an 8-inch diameter cream cake in to 10 portions (47gs) each one would contain about 190 calories. A medium blubbery muffin is about 440 calories
so the message is clear
Move away from the muffin!! Wink

Hi Ouryve
I think the thing about looking back is that the portion sizes were much smaller then, so therefore you were eating much fewer calories. And I remember fairy cakes as being very light and small. They almost melted in your mouth.

Hi Tom
Often we mistake thirst for hunger. So you are definitely doing the right thing by having a drink of water first and seeing if that satisfies you.

A baked potato the size of a computer mouse? Wow! Mine was at least three times that big at Applebee's, with butter and sour cream. The steak was probably the size of two palms.

I like your site as it is not too jumbled with extra 'things', is crisp and easy to read, and the pictures are clear.

I am in U.S. Chipotle is a restaurant which makes huge burritos. The other day I was there, and they now make one half again as big. How big is a normal stomach, anyway?

nutritioncoach · 22/03/2013 19:14

Hi Hansiemon
The stomach is about the size of your hand but can stretch to hold about 3 litres. Pretty impressive!
I've been to America a number of times for a holiday and the food portions are absolutely huge. Food wastage must be a big problem. It must be so hard to limit yourself when such vast amounts of food are so readily available. But if the food manufacturers and restaurants won't do it then we have to.
Thank you for the positive feedback about my website. I wanted it to look clean and fresh and 'healthy'

Cheers
Susan
