What are these guys, snipe? They're slightly smaller than the blackbird that just sat next to them.

Thanks

I think they are snipe. Are they near marshland or fens or similar?

bureni · 16/01/2013 14:16

Looks like snipe to me.

Fens. I was just bemoaning the fact that the only things in the garden today were collared doves, blackbirds, robins and sparrows when these two turned up.

Its nice to see something different for a change, spotted a nice pair of cormorants and a single cattle egret along the shore last week which is pretty rare in the U.K

In that case I would definitely say Snipe! How lovely. Edge of London here and the most exotic I get is the odd Jay (unless you count the paraqueets that are invading us!!)

It is quite a cool place to live, I back on to an SSSI so our dog walks are usually quite interesting though we often don't get much exciting stuff in the garden itself.

Gosh, you don't often see snipe as clearly as that - you know that's how the term 'sniper' arose, someone who was able to shoot a snipe.

ooh, images in posts -I've not seen that before and only just noticed Image box below the Message box. Cool!

Come to my garden because they're back. Shall I put the kettle on in case I get an invasion of twitchers?

Strangely snipe are one of the most common birds I see, usually in flocks of around 50-100 at any one time.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 16/01/2013 16:56

If I get 100 in the garden there'll be no room for the dog!

Gorgeous! Def snipe.

Wow~ Sorry I do not know much about the bird, but they are so cute in the snow! Love them! :)
