my DD starts school in 8 days, the school is a good 20 mins walk from the house. she only just manages to walk to the end of the street before wanting to be picked up and carried. so I was thinking of just taking her in her buggy to school. WWYD??

Buggy there (uphill)
Walk home (downhill)

Gradually build up her stamina.

I think its classed as pre school but she has to wear a uniform so to me its school lol.

DS went to preschool by bike trailer at just 3, plenty of his peers arrived by scooter or in a buggy, preschool at top of a hill, 20 mins fast adult walk from home. In nice dry weather we would walk across the fields which cut the distance down to a 20 min child speed walk but still involved going up the hill.

When you are in a rush to get there on time I'd take the buggy, but I'm surprised anyone thinks 20 min walking (a mile tops?) is an unrealistic expectation of a 3 yr old. My 2 yr old walks half a mile back from older DS's school twice a day plus a dog walk, and walked a good 3 miles round a forest today without being carried or whinging. I take him in the buggy for speed and my convenience if I'm in a hurry.
My 6 yr old walks at my speed, I can't abide children who dawdle along. His classmates are often horrified if they come to play and I expect them to walk home. It's no wonder all the kids are becoming obese, we've stopped expecting them to do any exercise!

I think you'd be amazed how far she can walk if you refuse to carry. We got rid of DS's buggy when he was 2.5 as he was more than capable of walking. DS will walk twice the distance with mummy rather than daddy tho as he knows I can't pick him up (I have RA and really can't rather than won't). The problem with the school run is that time is often of the essence although if you build up stamina at other times then she will probably be fine. BTW not all kids find nursery or even school tiring even at the beginning. Mines a bundle of energy after school as he runs around less than when he was at nursery from 8-6.

Last winter, at three, DS buggied to preschool. It's 5 mins in grown up walking time. A year later, he'll walk for miles.
