Surname spelled wrong on Ryanair booking

lookout · 17/07/2012 20:40

My name is fine but ds2's name (carried infant, no seat as he's only 9 months) is spelled incorrectly, I must have typed it wrong. Went on the manage my booking thing and I can only change my name online, there's no way of changing his, and if I want to change a name it's an extra £110! Should I call and tell them about the mistake prior to flying or just roll up to the airport and claim ignorance? I'm worried that if I phone they'll make me name change there and then or cancel, whereas at the aiport we might get away with it as there's only one letter wrong and it's obviously a typing error Confused

There are some airlines that might be sympathetic and change for free, or let you through at the airport but, as it's Ryanair, I would be inclined to contact them to plead ask if they'd consider making a correction to the booked name, rather than turning up at the airport in hopes.

Sorry I don't have a better solution, but hopefully someone else will.

Hassled · 17/07/2012 22:18

I dunno. While Ryanair as a corporation are evil sick bastards, Ryanair staff are usually pretty nice and helpful. There's a good chance they'll see harrassed mum with 9 month old and an obvious typo and wave you on your way. But obviously you can't guarantee that - you might get some jobsworth.

savoycabbage · 17/07/2012 22:19

I would ring and nicely ask them to change it.

It's not an internal flight is it? If not and the details don't match the passports then I don't think you have much chance.

I mis-entered my DOB for a Ryanair flight to Cork and couldn't change it. No one mentioned it and everything was fine but I don't think DOB is on the boarding pass and I had some really bad weather so they were trying to keep everyone calm during severe delays, possibly not making much of an effort to check things.

iknowwho · 17/07/2012 22:24

It would be cheaper to change your name by deed poll than to ask Ryan Air anything that involves them being helpful!! Grin

daenerysstormborn · 17/07/2012 22:30

the only bit of paperwork for a ryanair flight is the boarding pass, which you print at home once you've checked in. do you have a scanner?, print out all the passes, but do yours twice. cut out the correct surname, stick it in place on ds's pass, scan it in, and reprint. just make sure when you scan it in, you do it at high resolution so the barcode prints correctly as they will need to scan this at the airport. would that work?

i've flown with ryanair twice, and we had a nightmare first time as dh had used a faulty printer and none of the barcodes printed correctly, they came out grey instead of black and white!

daenerysstormborn · 17/07/2012 22:32

oh, and if they query the spelling, just say it must be a computer error at their end as the boarding pass is correct Wink

thenightsky · 17/07/2012 22:34

I booked my mum in as Mr on Easyjet and nobody noticed.

TerracottaPie · 17/07/2012 22:42

We've got the same issue here but with Flybe. DP is supposed to be ringing to find out what to do (as it was his fault). I'm hoping it won't cost that much! I know depending on what they say I'll want to try and wing it. It's not too noticeable? - just an 'i' instead of an 'l'

Can you check in carried infants online with RyanAir? I know BMIBaby and Flybe don't let you.

CelticRepublican · 17/07/2012 22:49

Good tip Daenerys.

lookout · 18/07/2012 08:05

Thanks for all the replies. I quicky google showed that people have rung before and they've changed without a problem as it's an obvious typo (a at the end of surname instead of d). I will phone today and find out. While I'm pretty sure they won't bother at the airport I'd hate to start our hols off with a situation! If they decide to be unhelpful, I'll do daenerys trick Grin

Just called and they corrected free of charge. All's well that ends well Smile

glad they changed it, although my way was far more fun Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 18/07/2012 18:36

PMSL at "It would be cheaper to change your name by deed poll than to ask Ryan Air anything that involves them being helpful!!"

If they'd not been willing to accept it was a typo then that probably would have been not far from the truth !

MoonlightandRoses · 18/07/2012 20:24

Good Lord - you are only the second person I've come across who got something for free from Ryanair! Maybe the worm is turning...

Have a lovely holiday.

daenerysstormborn · 18/07/2012 23:51

have to say, we've flown with ryanair twice, and found them to be ok, the only issues we had were our own fault, not theirs!

ButtonBoo · 21/07/2012 08:09

We had exactly the same problem.

My MIL took us (DP and I - pg at the time) and BIL/SIL and their two boys on holiday for her 60th. I noticed one DN surname was spelt wrong as two letters were transposed.

MIL partner (who made the booking) just called and told them. They changed it no problem.

I think the charge is if you were changing the name like from Smith to Brown for example i.e if you were looking to change the passenger.

And besides, surely it's better to do it now and risk the charge than have your whole family turn up at the airport and risk not being allowed to fly?!!

ButtonBoo · 21/07/2012 08:11

Sorry! Just read the rest of the thread. Glad you got it sorted. Enjoy your hols!!!

Pedigree · 21/07/2012 08:24

Don't even go into the scanner route! If someone suspects you have been medling with names in travel documents you might not only miss your flight but spend a good few hours being interrogated by airport security and being listed as a risk traveller (I know someone listed due to carry computer components on flight due to his job, it is excrutiating you are fully searched manually and asked to open all your bags at every single security point) additionally medling with your documents will be useless. At the end of the day, the record they have in thevcomouter is wrong.

If it is a single letter that is wrong, i wouldn't worry about it. They won't care.

Trioofprinces · 24/07/2012 08:24

Agree totally with Pedigree - I was shocked to see the scanner suggestion! Whilst it might seem ok to change a small thing, it is technically fraud. NOT a good idea.

daenerysstormborn · 02/08/2012 21:44

oh fgs lighten up!, it's not like i suggested starting a passport forgery racket. it was to correct one misspelled letter.

SDTGisAnOlympicWolefGenius · 02/08/2012 22:45

Well - the airline might agree with you, daenerys - but if they don't, they could get really sticky about it - and I don't think it would be a good idea for airlines to start letting people cut and paste their boarding passes or travel documents.

SDTGisAnOlympicWolefGenius · 02/08/2012 22:46

And airport police are famously lighthearted people about letting people travel with altered travel documents. Hmm

FoxyRoxy · 12/08/2012 11:03

My dad once booked me a flight back to the uk from where I live (Spain) and spelled my surname wrong by one letter. I didn't even know until I showed up at the airport and EJ couldn't find my booking using my passport! Luckily I contacted him and got the booking ref but they weren't bothered about the typo at all. Glad you got it sorted.
