DH's 40th Birthday pressie, give it early or not?

So DH is 40 in August and I had planned to get him a little 4x4 (he really wants one) we saw one on e-bay and it needed a bit of work so we thought fine, get it now that gives DB (a mechanic) 2 months to sort it out for DH. Well, we saw another one, same price, no work needed, MOT is going on it this week and it is ready to go so we bought that one instead.

Would you give him the car as an early birthday pressie (which my logical brain is telling me to do) so he can enjoy it and it is not sat idle for 2 months, or wait for his big party so all his friends and family (who know what he is getting so it is not a show off look what I did type situation iynwim) they can all see his Shock face (this is what the emotional part of me would do)

Please help. WWYD?

Just so you know, this is not a stealth boast, I genuinely have saved and borrowed (thanks mum) to get him something he really wants and needs, and don't know what to do for best now!

I can't understand whether he knows about the present.

No it is a surprise, he has no clue.

Right, so you've already bought the car. It made more sense than buying the fixer-upper, but DH has no idea you were buying a 4x4 at all? Who is 'we' in the opening sentence?

I think you'll need to get someone to look it over first anyway as it seems a bit too good to be true that it was the same price as the fixer-upper. Assuming all is well, I think I would still save it for his birthday - as you say, the surprise factor is important as well.

Sorry, me and my brother are the we, I was panic typing Blush, brother is a mechanic and has already passed is as a good runner, not sure why it was so cheap, but brother has done a reg check and his usual mechanic checks and says it is good to go. I would like to save it for DHs birthday but brother is saying that we might as well be letting him use it now.

Why don't you get your brother to drive up to yours in it when it's ready. Presumably your husband will be green with envy. Ask him if he wants a test drive. Ask if he likes it. Say "Oh go on then, you can have it!"

Ooh that's a good idea! If we can do it when we just happen to have people round as well then they will still get to see his Shock face!
