This sounds silly but how do you start a food blog? DP and I are planning to start one but we're both crap with presentation and making food look good :/ And how often do you need to post?

I'm adding you all to my google reader :) Baroness I love how simple your layout is.

BlackAffronted · 13/05/2012 13:45

I just went into blogger & got started really! I post about 5 times a week average, but you can post as often (or not) as you like. Your page views will drop a bit on the days you dont make a new post though.

I usually take multiple photos from all different angles before choosing the best.

Make sure to post your blog here when you get started :) would love to see it.

Thanks Black! That's how my main blog got started. I rarely post on it at the moment due to work and coursework taking over my life but DP and I love our food so I think I could muster the energy to post tidbits regularly!

Do you ever post 'in the making' photos of the food or just when it's finished? & what about when you know your recipes but tend to 'guesstimate' the amounts? Like I make a sweet veg pie but I have no idea on how much of everything I use, I just use one small sweet potato, a handful of carrots/parsnips and what's in the cupboard essentially! Would I need to measure it all out to post the recipe on my blog so people will be interested or are readers okay with "a couple of carrots and a parsnip or two..."

NettoSuperstar · 13/05/2012 14:05

Oh, I'm interested in the recipe thing too.
I use recipes, but always chop and change amounts and to suit what I have in.
I can link to anything online and explain what changes I made, but what about when I've used a book?
I'm hoping to get 6 posts by Friday, but am not staring at all until tomorrow, so depends how easy it is to figure out.
I aim to update most days, I try new dishes most days and often several.

RecipeJunkie · 13/05/2012 19:50

confused pixie that's what i do quite a bit, I guess it won't be enough for some people, but when I do that, I suppose I am hoping that it will encourage other people to be a bit braver and just go for it - you don't need to be exact with most things. I posted about some fishcakes I made the other day and had no idea about the amount of mash I'd used - which was left over from an earlier meal - so i just explained how many potatoes I'd started with... I think a lot of people are just looking for ideas and inspiratino, so if you're not too exact it doesn't matter too much. And like Black - I just went for it - there's no 'right way', I don't think.

Netto I asked a similar question about books - I got a rocket from Dan Lepard's business manager a few weeks ago for copying out a recipe of his which I had found online - he wanted me to just put in the link - anyway, I got some really good advice from another blogger which I copied down and forgot to keep the link so I am really sorry that I can't pass on the source of the advice, but she basically said:

  1. For recipes directly copied from books, just link to either the book on Amazon or somewhere legitimate that has published it with permission elsewhere.
  2. For recipes you are making up or adapting, compare 2 or 3 versions elsewhere and develop ingredients that are a hybrid of what you've seen done in a few other places. Then write your own words.

You can say you are inspired by/have adapted a recipe - my latest post includes 2 adapted recipes... (shameless self publicising there]]

BlackAffronted · 13/05/2012 20:20

I tweak most recipes I try, so I tend to change 2 or more of the ingreients/quantities, and I write the method usually in my own way rather than type word for word from a book. I was told that this was ok, as you had adapted the recipe it was no longer copywrited.

Thanks recipejunkie :)

I go by mugs quite a lot, and only just recently discovered how big a proper tablespoon actually is! Always thought that the dessert spoons were tablespoons, no wonder nothing was ever as strong as I thought it'd be Blush

NettoSuperstar · 14/05/2012 11:33

That's really helpful.
It now appears I have a blog, a very basic blog but a blog!

AnnieWinehouse · 14/05/2012 13:29

Netto, let's see then! Link please!

Kellamity · 14/05/2012 13:45

Thanks for all the blogging tips. I seem to have set up my own blog Shock RecipeJunkie - I love your blog and am following you now.

confusedpixie · 14/05/2012 13:46

Link or it didn't happen ;) have you posted yet? I made one as I was posting the other day, can't link as on the phone but it's t-rexlearnstoeatplants.blogspot.com I think, definitely t-rex learns to eat plants though. No posts, dp and I need to work out what we'll do first. it will be a vegetarian food blog though.

Kellamity · 14/05/2012 13:49

Am following you too Annie

RecipeJunkie · 14/05/2012 14:19

Thanks Kellamity - what's your blog called - if you post a link here, I'd love to have a look!

NettoSuperstar · 14/05/2012 15:07

My Blog
It's obviously very new, as of today, and I have lots to learn so it will be tweaked, but I have one!

BaronessOrczy · 14/05/2012 15:31

What a great start Netto!

I've followed those of you who posted your twitter names on here - I'm @FoodieV

And thanks Pixie Blush I was actually pondering whether to change it or not!

BlackAffronted · 14/05/2012 15:56

No follower button Netto! Great start though. I love reading food blogs!

OP posts:
NettoSuperstar · 14/05/2012 16:58

How do I add a follower button?
I have the 6 posts I need to join the MN blog thingy, just need to work out how to do that now!

AnnieWinehouse · 14/05/2012 17:44

Netto, I like it! Don't forget to give each post a title though.
Six posts in one day! That's a week for me (at least!!)

To add a follow button, go to your Design, then Layout, then you'll see Add A Gadget bits, where you can click on this and it gives you the option of adding a follow button somewhere. HTH.

Thanks Kellamity Smile I'd like to see yours - could you link please?

Baroness I'm following you on Twitter too...!!

AND I've finally told DH - the first person in RL - about it. He didn't criticize anyway!

BlackAffronted · 14/05/2012 17:57

Would also like to see Kellamitys blog :)

OP posts:
NettoSuperstar · 14/05/2012 18:13

Thanks Annie, will tweak tomorrow.
As much as I was desperate for a food blog, am blogged out for today!
I really do have so much to learn, it's all new to me. I'm hoping to develop it and improve it over time as I learn what I'm doing.

BlackAffronted · 14/05/2012 18:23

Netto, the only think I would say is to maybe tweak your comments, a lot of people are put off commenting if they have to type word verification. I took it off & have never had any spam whatsoever.

OP posts:
NettoSuperstar · 14/05/2012 18:32

I don't know how to do that!
I will look tomorrow.

MadeleineMorrow · 14/05/2012 18:45

Arabian Nights (www.kitchenjourneys.net) sources ingredients for a Morrocan Magic meal. Enjoy!

RecipeJunkie · 14/05/2012 20:53

Baroness - I'll follow you. I'm not too good at twitter but trying to improve - @recipejunkie27

Netto - am on short time today will have a look later/tomorrow...

NettoSuperstar · 14/05/2012 21:12

I think I've got the titles on now, will have to look for the follow button tomorrow.
I need to find decent, not too old photos of DD and I too, I can't take any of me right now, as I have a swollen face due to steroids.
Thanks RecipeJunkie, I'll also make sure I follow all the blogs on this thread, I'm grateful for all the advice and encouragement.
