Just bought a New Look "Easy" sewing pattern.

Is it just me or does anyone else find that the "Easy" pattern isn't actually so Easy?!

What is the pattern for Milly ?

MillyAndFriends · 22/04/2012 11:21

I bought 4 (I was being overly ambitious) which includes 2 dress patterns for girls.
I've taken a look at the instructions again, and patterns.
I am thinking the best thing to do is to just try out the simplest one first, take my time, and see what I come up with.
What do you think?

I always think sewing patterns read similar to the instructions that come with kids games. You read them through, you read them through again, and think Well, that makes no sense at all -even when its a game you have played before and actually know how to play it. The instructions just read far more complicated than they actually are! I think the trick is to just read one sentence at a time, then do Exactly (exactly!!) what it says without questioning. I ve been dressmaking for over twenty years, and I think in all that time, I ve only come across one pattern that hasnt been correct - although I have made a few mistakes thinking that I know best and would do it my own way! I find some of the so called easy patterns much less obvious then the more difficult ones. What sort of style is it? I think if you cut it accurately, sew your seam allowances accurately, and just take it one sentence at a time, you ll be fine. (Some sentences I have to read over and over again as I cant grasp what its trying to say, but actually when you do it, its far simpler than they are making it appear!) If you tack each stage together before steaming ahead with the machining, you ll see whats not right, and can try it again without making a mess. Let me know if you need any advice, I ll try to help. Taking your time and not rushing I m sure is the best way to go. Good luck!

Thats the way, little by little! Each pattern is a bit of a journey and adventure, but really satisfying when you beat the little monster and see it all come together. Hope it works out well!

Hi Dorothy,
Thank you for all your advice. I did manage to put it together!
It took me forever but I managed to work it out. I ended up repicking and starting again as I wasn't happy with the results but as you say little by little!

Thank you again.
Best wishes
Milly

Hi Dorothy, You can see my "Creation" in my latest post.
It's the choirboy look- Shrekkie is my muse, and its balanced out with a big cup of laziness.
