Cant get DD's knot out of her hair!

Its driving me nuts! Every time i wash her hair i dry it & brush it & its all lovely & smooth, she wakes in the morning & BOOM! Que a nest in the back of her hair. I've tried de-tangling spray, i've tried conditioners, she has her hair up every day (unless we're not going anywhere then it stays down) i dont know what else to do. It hurts the poor girl when i brush through it. HELP!

Honestly? I'd cut her hair shorter. We have the same problem brewing with dd3' hair which inexplicably on the back of her head has a lot of very curly hair that just falls into dreadlocks every day. She's only 2 so keeping get hair short hasn't met with any resistance yet.

DD has a tangle teezer but its no good for big knots. I start off with the tangle teezer, then use a comb, doing it in sections, holding the hair shaft so it doesn't pull at her scalp.

It takes forever. She has knotty hair, its fine and as you say nestlike of a morning. DS's is completely different, I think he's only ever had a know once in 8 years.

I do find J & J blue tangle shampoo works a bit too.

Let her sleep on a silk pillowcase. I had the same problem and this really works.

Can she sleep with it in pigtails/one long plait/french plait? I have long wavy hair and that works for me and is far cheaper than products Grin

Toeuffeta · 07/04/2012 12:33

Silk pillowcase - wow! Never heard of that

Fiderer · 07/04/2012 12:57

Plait it at night. Takes a minute and no knots. Even a ponytail helps. D loves the plait (now thankfully) as she likes the slight wave the next morning.

Mmmcoffee · 07/04/2012 13:00

DD has this, v long hair and used to get a horrible big birds nest right at the back of her neck. Plait is the way to go! Though the first time I tried it poor DD was crying in the morning as her head hurt 'all night', I had plaited it really tightly as her hair tends to slip out of a plait. Blush. A loose plait is the way to go! Grin

SilkieChicken · 07/04/2012 16:32

Plait and tangle teazer here!

FullBeam · 07/04/2012 16:36

Another vote for a tangle teezer and bedtime plait!

GinPalace · 07/04/2012 16:38

and always brush the ends first, last inch or so and gradually work your way up to the roots - that hurts less when there are tangles. :)

BackforGood · 07/04/2012 16:55

Another for plaiting it at night - a loose plait doesn't make you too frizzy, but keeps the hair from getting knotty.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 07/04/2012 17:00

I agree with plaiting.

I have just cut DD's hair though because of tangle issues.Just a bit shorter to take off the stragglier ends, which seem to tangle easiest, makes a difference.

I have also used a weak spray of tea tree oil and water in the mornings - it both discourages nits and I find it easier to brush through.I used to also put in lavender oil but I worry that may attract bees in the Summer.....

WhereMyMilk · 10/04/2012 22:51

Agree with everyone else. Tangle teaser. I do 3 loose plaits as DD finds it easier to sleep with less bulk at her neck.

Oh, and the joy that is Morrocan Oil applied daily:o

artydeb · 10/04/2012 23:02

DD has very long hair, she has a plait each night (and most days) and I use a Denman natural bristle hairbrush along with Vosene tea tree detangler, best combination we've had. I hold the hair right above where i'm brushing to stop the tug. Haven't tried a tangle teaser but I find the natural bristle brush (its got longer nylon bristles too) really seems to get the knots out and look after her hair.

seeker · 10/04/2012 23:07

Tangle teaser doesn't work for all hair- dd and me for two. Keep it plaited at night. Or get it cut. Depending on how old she is, long loose hair on very little children is a mistake anyway- it gets in their way. Children should have practical clothes and hair, IMHO that doesn't get between them and being active and playing and getting on with life.

You wont believe this. Brought the tangle teezer from amazon. Very impressed with how cute it is!! Went to sainsburys today with DD. Looking at the detangle spray with tea tree oil in it & whats next to it? Tangle teezer. For 6.99! I paid £13 for mine! I couldnt believe it. Of all places to sell them. Then as if that wasnt bad enough, DD & i got all excited over how great the spray is i read the label on the back "May cause effect on epilepsy." DD said "You've got that mummy" I reassured her it takes more than a sniff of tea tree oil to knock me flat & fidgety!
